Top Ten Tuesday… Opening Lines

Top Ten Tuesday… Opening Lines

Today’s prompt for Top Ten Tuesday (hosted over at That Artsy Reader Girl) is on the them of opening lines. The suggestion is to go for “Best, favorite, funny, unique, shocking, gripping, lines that grabbed you immediately“, which immediately threw me into a tail spin because I’m not that sort of organised reader who keeps meticulous note of such things.

Perhaps I need a new shelf on Goodreads, but since I am trying to reduce said number of shelves maybe not. I’m sort of inspired to set up a spreadsheet in order to record future opening lines that are in some way memorable. Trouble is I have an atrocious memory so there is every chance the spreadsheet would collect cobwebs since I’d forget to fill it in.

So back to my dilemma of ‘I don’t really remember/have any opening lines that spring to mind’. I mean, there’s always “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” which I’ve probably misquoted since I haven’t actually read A Tale of Two Cities. So here’s what I’m going to do, I will choose 10 books from my favourites of 2019, and since I read 318 books according to GR (give or take a few beta reads, the odd DNF and a few re-reads) that might not be such an easy choice to make.

Release & Review //\\ Zhànshì

Zhànshì by Anna Edwards

Collection: Sinister Fairytales Collection

Release: May 26, 2020

Genre: Dark Fairy Tale Retelling

Whilst I’m not quite convinced that this was quite a 4 star read but it was much closer to that than 3 stars, so 4 it is.

Zhànshì is a well paced, entertaining, has a great heroine, a sexy hero and held my interest throughout. The story is set in modern times, though this is only obvious when modern technology is mentioned. Most of the time it had either an historical or a fantasy feel to it, but that made it more interesting not less.

Whilst this didn’t totally absorb me it did retain my attention and, unlike a couple of other recent reads, I never considered DNF’ing it. I appreciated how skillfully the author wove a tale that really did feel like a darker retelling of the Disney fairytale (as opposed to the original Chinese legend). Lia has always felt like an outsider, uninterested in becoming a warriors wife but rather wanting to be the warrior herself. I liked both her and Jaxon, they both held honour, faith and family in high regard and were prepared to die for their principles.

We all have our own interpretation of dark, so for me it was more that this had dark themes. However it does need a trigger warning as it contains one more detailed scene, and another implied, of sexual assault on the heroine. There are also incidences of physical assault too. However I find my darkness in the psychological effects and emotional impact on main characters but Lia was too strong, too much of a warrior to allow the enemy to break her, so for me it made the dark aspects easier to read. It fitted well with Lia’s strength of character so I had no qualms about her response to Wang’s treatment.

I would have liked just a bit more drama, a touch more angst and not quite such a quick resolution (I won’t say easy because it wasn’t). Not so much plot holes as glossing over the difficult parts. However I still enjoyed this story and read it in one sitting, it’s a decent story.

Blurb:

Lia has known she was different since the age of five when her father taught her the skills of her ancestors. His stories of heroic exploits have fueled her fantasies for years. Little did she know that her expertise would be called upon when two cities, two triads, go to war. Will it be a step too far to think she can hide who she really is?

Jaxon has known his career path since he was a little boy when his father promised his only son to the leader of the Yu Shi triad. Jaxon doesn’t mind—it allows him to center his chaotic thoughts and fight his opponents to the death. But when he’s partnered with a mysterious new recruit, he begins to question everything he knows. What is the young boy hiding from him?

Zhanzhi is a modern day retelling of the tale of Mulan for the Sinister Fairytales Collection. Warrior Lia must find her inner strength to defeat a deadly enemy, who’s been left bitter by his quest for absolute power, while at the same time falling in love when she least expects it. Nothing will be as it seems in this dark triad world where a moment’s hesitation can be your downfall.

Author Bio:

All I am a British author, from the depths of the rural countryside near London. In a previous life, I was an accountant from the age of twenty-one. I still do that on occasions, but most of my life is now spent intermingling writing while looking after my husband, two children and two cats (probably in the inverse order to the one listed!). When I have some spare time, I can also be found writing poetry, baking cakes (and eating them), or behind a camera snapping like a mad paparazzi.

I’m an avid reader who turned to writing to combat my depression and anxiety. I have a love of travelling and like to bring this to my stories to give them the air of reality.

I like my heroes hot and hunky with a dirty mouth, my heroines demure but with spunk, and my books full of dramatic suspense.

It’s Monday! What are YOU reading?

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

Welcome to another Monday and another chance to share books read, reading and to read. It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is a great way to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment and er… add to your groaning TBR pile! . This meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn over at The Book Date.

If you decide to join in leave me a comment and I’ll come by and visit your blog. In the meantime here’s my reading summary.

Recent Reads

Last week I read the following books the first two were disappointing. The second two, which are released in the next couple of days, were thankfully much better.

Reading Right Now

Along with some beta reading for a couple of authors, I’m getting close to finishing Treachery by Lily White. I’m going to have fun reviewing it because it made me feel so much – not all of it good – but overall it will be very positive.

Remaining Reads

I have an arc lined up next, Midnight Fae Academy #2 by Lexi C Foss, after that I really need to get back on top of my TBR. A couple of possibilities are Ice Age Shifters 1-4 by Carol Van Natta, Sin & Lightening by K.F. Breene and I need to finish the Pony Tales series by C.P. Mandara that I started a few weeks ago.

Review //\\ Wine Hard, Baby

Wine Hard, Baby (OHellNo #6) by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff

I struggled with my rating on this, I mean it has the usual fun and quirky humour of the rest of the OHellNo series. It also has a sexy cowboy and a nerdy girl, lots of banter and plenty of crazy moments too. I read it all, I smiled and swooned, so it wasn’t terrible but I just wanted… more. The authors writing voice and quality is a 4 but the story was nothing more than an ok 2. In fact I would describe this as cotton candy, very sweet as it melts on the tongue, but ultimately there is very little substance to it.

The characters whilst pleasant were quite one dimensional, the funny moments more like random sketches in a comedy show and I’m not sure if I ever really found a plot in there. I wish I had liked it more, because on paper it had so much to like about it, but it just somehow missed the mark for me. I also have to question how they fell in love because there weren’t that many interactions between them, nor any genuine getting to know each other moments. The whole story was just one long rinse and repeat of nothing much really, too much deliberate miscommunication.

Maybe I was looking for too much from this book, it’s a quick, easy and very light read, and perhaps that’s all it needs to be.

Genre – Contemporary Romance, Romantic Comedy

Goodreads – https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/50848537-wine-hard-baby

My name is Camila Clark. And that sexy cowboy right there? The one with the devilish smile, twinkling brown eyes, and tattoos on his muscular arms? He’s Jed, the guy I turned down flat back in Texas. He just showed up here in Oregon at the winery where I work.
The question is why?
Not that it really matters. I have my reasons for staying away from all that manly temptation. Reasons he can’t possibly understand but seems determined to punish me for.

But the more I fight him, the more I learn about this mysterious, hot-as-hell cowboy. I just don’t know how much longer I can keep pretending to hate him.
The problem is, I’m technically engaged to a guy I’ve never met.

Review //\\ Mafia Lullaby

Mafia Lullaby by Alta Hensley & Measha Stone

Whilst this deals with dark themes of captivity and sex slavery, it didn’t hit very high on my dark-o-meter.

Reading reviews on Goodreads, I was surprised at the number that mentioned finding the DD/lg theme disturbing, I thought it featured fairly minimally. Ariana’s co-captives had been regressed mentally to a 6 year old, via drugging, though if you don’t regress, well there’s no returning to your normal life, which leaves living out your days in a whore house, or not living at all.

To my mind the shock factor/ horror comes from the fact that these are drugged sex slaves being sold off to goodness knows what future abuse. The age play element was mainly calling their trainer Daddy, the reader being told they were colouring and the fact that they had ‘nannies’ who looked after them during the day. I was more concerned that we didn’t truly see much in the way of any credible training, if I’m honest.

The writing flows seamlessly and I couldn’t say author A wrote this part, whilst B definitely wrote that. The two voices were blended into a very easy to read writing style. The characters felt very firm and consistent, the story had good pace and, whilst it is similar to many other “captive” stories, I definitely found it to be an enjoyable read. Both Ariana and Costello were likeable characters and their story was quite sweet, if also a bit kinky and a lot ‘wrong’ (though NOT for the kinky element I hasten to add!).

It was all just a little too nice for my tastes, a little too gentle with its timely interventions and easy solutions. I like my captives to suffer and other than a few spankings/paddlings I didn’t really experience that. I didn’t feel enough fear, terror or despair from Ariana, nor menace and cruelty from Costello. In fact he was just far too nice and gentle a man, particularly considering he was involved in the abduction, torture and training of sex slaves. Acknowledgement was given to the fact that he was a “bad man”, and Ariana did challenge him over his attitude and regard of his previous trainees. I just couldn’t marry the man we saw in Mafia Lullaby with the job he was doing.

I would have enjoyed this more if they had both been a little bit fiercer, if there had been more fire and fight. However that’s because I like my captive romances on the pitch black end of the spectrum and I’m confident this book will be perfect for many readers who like a lighter shade of grey.  Mafia Lullaby is still a well written book and one that is definitely worth giving a try.

Genre – Mafia/Contemporary Romance

Six For Sunday… Favourite Series Characters

Six For Sunday.. Favourite Characters From Series

Six For Sunday is a meme hosted by A Little But A Lot. May’s theme has been series, with this week’s prompt being favourite characters from series. I think I could populate this list repeatedly just for one author. So I’m going to spin it differently and choose six characters for six series.

1 The Messenger Chronicles by Pippa DaCosta

So the six characters to love in this series are:

1 – Kesh
The only female protagonist in the series, the Wraithmaker, a slave to the fae. With her ability to blend tec with magic, she is determined to be more than a pawn in someone else’s game. I adored Kesh, I laughed with her, I cried for her and loved alongside her. She isn’t perfect by a long shot but she loves her men fiercely and loyally.

2 – Kellee
The sheriff, the last Vakaru and all around good guy. Kellee stole my heart, even though he was tough on Kesh he loved her just as hard. The moment he pinned his shiny sheriff’s star to Kesh was one of many moments that had me sobbing.

3 – Talen
A my Talen was an enigma at times, but he was always Kesh’s biggest fan. A fae with a mystery, a pilot and the gentleness to Kellee’s hard edges. This man made me laugh and cry in equal measure.

4 – Sota
An AI and, for a long time, Kesh’s only friend. Sota undergoes some dramatic changes during the course of the series, but what never changes is his sarcastic sense of humour. So often, when this book had tears of misery and pain pouring down my cheeks, Sota would make fun of one of the other guys and pull me from the depths of my despair.

5 – Arran
I won’t say too much about this guy, because there are just so many spoilers around him, his history and his story. He is a source of strength and love for Kesh, and someone to whom she feels she owes a debt.

6 – Sirius
An autumn fae, a guardian, an man hiding so many secrets, one of which is his love for the Wraithmaker. He sacrifices much for Kesh, annoys the hell out of Kellee and often seems more like the bad guy.

Genre – Fantasy/ Science Fiction / Reverse Harem Slow Burn Romance

Goodreads – https://www.goodreads.com/series/222402-the-messenger-chronicles

2 The Veil and Chaos Rises Series by Pippa DaCosta

1 – Muse
A half demon who grew up in the netherworld, surviving abuse, torment and horrors beyond belief. She just wants to be left in peace, but that isn’t going to happen.

2 – Akil
The Prince of Greed, a power from the netherworld, deceitful, manipulative, not to be trusted but oh so sexy. He claims he isn’t good, says he can’t love anyone, but his actions and deeds say something very different indeed.

3 – Stefan
Maybe he’s the good guy of the story, maybe not. He keeps his own secrets close to his chest, and a trip to the netherworld results in a very different man.

4 – Li’el
The Prince of Pride, who appears in a spin off series (Chaos Rises) and proves to be just as slippery a fish as his brethren Akil. I totally fell in love with this guy.

5 – Gem
Another half demon, but this one born and raised in a lab, treated like an experiment and tortured in the name of science. She was strong, determined, naive, loving and loyal.

6 – Torrent
A good guy in a bad situation, but always on Gem’s side, whether she wanted him to be or not.

Genre – Urban Fantasy

Silk & Steel Series by Ariana Nash

1 – Eroan
An elf, part of the Order whose role is to hunt and kill dragons. A golden man who is a ray of sunlight in a dark world, he has a deep sense of right and wrong, of honour and loyalty.

2 – Lysander
A dragon, a prince and an outsider within his own nest. The dark to Eroan’s light and the strongest of men, refusing to be beaten down by the slings and arrows of life.

3 – Akiem
Brother to Lysander, at times his heart is as black as his dragon scales. However you can see glimpses of something good within him.

4 – Zane
A flame haired elf whose love and belief saves Akiem from a worthless existence.

5 – Trey
A laughing, loving elf messenger turned assassin of the Order during the war with the dragons. He brings joy and peace but at what cost to himself?

6 – Venali
A mysterious, supersexy Order leader but also a man who carries his wounds and scars inside.

Genre – MM Epic Fantasy Romance

The Walshes by Kate Canterbary

I featured this series a few weeks ago, under a family relationships meme. These books are SO good, I’m featuring them again as six characters from a series!

1 Matthew (& Lauren)
Architect, second oldest, laid back but also a workaholic. He was delightfully sexy and was totally captivated by his sexy little schoolteacher.

2 Patrick (& Andy)
Oldest sibling, controlling, demanding, moody but a force to be reckoned with in the architects firm they run. He met his match with Andy, she won’t be cowed and she loves Harry Potter so gets the thumbs up from me.

3 Sam (& Tiel)
Arguably the most affected by their father’s violence and cruelty, Sam struggles to form any lasting relationships. Tiel is quirky, awkward and just so perfect for him, but this pair have a long and difficult journey to their HEA.

4 Shannon (& Will)
Abused and then abandoned by their father, whilst her brothers got to train as architects at a renowned college, she had to work and pay her own way through. She loves fiercely and will do anything for those who earn that love. She also swears like a sailor. She needs a strong and determined man and finds that in Will, a Navy SEAL, and just thinking about him makes me all hot and bothered – *swoon*.

5 Erin (& Nick)
Erin is the one who got away, the youngest of the siblings she doesn’t remember how cruel, how violent their father was.

5 Riley (& Alex)
Throughout the series this guy is central to so much. A man-child with a man-bun and a tramp stamp, he has a love of superheroes and unexpected depths that made me see him in a whole new light. Alex starts of as a sort-of friend, she needs a date, he needs a date, so they pretend to be one another’s significant other, until passion and emotions take over.

Genre – Contemporary Romance

1000 Revolutions by Pippa DaCosta

I feel the need to point out here that Ariana Nash is an alternative pen name for Pippa DaCosta and YES out of the six series, four are by the one author!

1 Caleb
Ex-AirFleet, a bad boy with an attitude and a chip on his shoulder that you could carve a house from. He is moody, sails under the radar but is loyal to a fault.

2 One
An AI with a soul. If I think of One, I think of the phrase “Count the stars” and before I know it I’m blubbering again.

3 Fran
On social media Caleb and Fran’s relationship description (if you could call what they have by that name) would most certainly be “it’s complicated”. You can never quite be sure whose side Fran is on, and whether she will shoot Caleb in the back. She’s a great girl though!

4 Bren
Bren is Caleb’s upstanding, by-the-rule-book, AirFleet brother. Despite appearances this pair care deeply for one another and Caleb would break all the rules and face the pits of hell for Bren.

5 Turner
A pirate with a hard-on for Caleb’s destruction. However this pair are unwilling allies as much as enemies. There is just something so attractive about this bad boy.

6 Fitz
A relative new comer to the series, Fitz is an engineering genius but really isn’t cut out for the life of an outlaw. There’s something between her and Bren, but just what it is, well you’ll have to find out for yourself.

Genre – Space Opera / Science Fiction

Steamwork Chronicles by Cari Silverwood

This is a steampunk world and whilst some characters overlap, each story can be read stand alone.

1 Claire
Claire is a frankenstruct – a living being made from an amalgamation of cloned body parts. A trained assassin who might just be falling in love with her next target.

2 Theo
A rich, ex-Air Corp nobleman and a Dom, Theo is just so gorgeous and irresistable. He isn’t going to be to happy though when he discovers Claire’s lies.

3 Kaysana
An airship captain who loses her airship, is caught in the middle of a zombie plague and is stuck with a frankenstruct, and Kaysana doesn’t like those cloned beings. Strangely though she finds herself attracted to Sten’s dominance, and his ropes!

4 Sten
A male clone not above indulging in some very dub-con activities. This guy is super dominant but equally protective and determined to keep Kaysana safe. Well safe from the Zombies, she might not be safe from him.

5 Sofia
An intelligent and brilliant researcher, Sofia needs to work undercover in Byzantium but that involves pretending to be the sex slave. Pretend to be owned by the man employed to be her bodyguard. It’s the only way to keep her safe from the Emperor, but who will keep her safe from Dankyo?

6 Dankyo
Despite what the intelligent and independent Sofia believes, the Dominant part of Dankyo can sense the submissiveness at her core. And boy does he have fun convincing her to follow his commands and in bending her body to his desires.

Top 5.. Books With A Flower Theme

Top 5 Books With A Flower Theme

This is a meme hosted by Devouring Books, and each week they provide a prompt or topic to inspire a book Top 5. This weeks suggestion is “books about plants/flowers (Can be on cover, in title or plot)”, and for once not a single book immediately sprang to mind. Thankfully Goodreads came to my rescue, yet again.

As always I’m featuring books that I’ve read and enjoyed.

White Rabbit (The Kingmaker Saga #1) by London Miller

I’m mentioning the first book in this series, though the theme of flowers, or specifically blue roses, runs throughout the series. They were one of the ways that Uilleam wooed Karina, after his greed and corruption destroys her, they become the chilling calling card of the sinister Belladonna. A romantic suspense series, with a complex plot, two powerful and determined main characters and a love that spans the eons, these books are some of my all time favourite reads.
London Miller has a magical way with words and the ability to make you love-hate-love her characters, simultaneously wanting to kill them and hug them at the same time.

Genre – Romantic Suspense

Goodreads – https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/42640242-white-rabbit

As an investigative journalist, Karina Ashworth’s job involves delving into New York’s black market of criminals and mischief where sin is almost too tempting to ignore.
When she crosses paths with a man whose smile is a little too cunning—and his power a little too vast—she learns very quickly that dancing with the devil is far more enjoyable than she had ever imagined.
But Uilleam Runehart is not at all what he seems, and as a notorious fixer with a thirst for power, he’ll do anything to obtain his title.
Ruthless.
Sinful.
Seductive.
How much would you pay to be a king?

The Romeo Effect (Cupids #4) by Lila Monroe

So for my second choice I’ve picked a light and fluffy rom-com with a heroine who owns a florists. Seth is a professional matchmaker who definitely meets his match in April, particularly since she is far more interested in him than she is the guy who is paying Seth to engineer a meeting for him with April. Lila Monroe’s books are always a guaranteed mood lightener and can usually be relied on for giggles alongside a great story.

Genre – Contemporary Romance / Rom-Com

Goodreads – https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/50862568-the-romeo-effect

Seth Harding is a real-life cupid. If you get trapped in an elevator with a handsome stranger, or stranded on a moonlit cruise with the man of your dreams, chances are, it’s not fate bringing the two of you together, it’s Seth somewhere, pulling the strings.
At least, that’s what I find out, when someone hires Seth to help win my heart. It would be romantic… if he weren’t all wrong for me. And Mr Right…?
Well, he might just be the guy behind the scenes.
Suddenly, my faith in soulmates is hitting a major complication. Seth is cynical, and argumentative… and seriously irresistible. Soon, the sparks between us are impossible to ignore. But can this hopeful romantic really find love with a man who engineers happily-ever-afters for a living? And when all the tricks and tests are stripped away, what makes two people truly meant to be?

In the Garden of Discontent by Lily White

This author provides the next two books in my list. At first I thought I was cheating by using a title that suggested flowers rather than included them, but the moment I read the blurb I realised I didn’t need to cheat at all. The garden in question was a bed of flowers that the hero Noah planted and grew over the plot of land where Ensley buried all her dark secrets. The ones you wouldn’t want any child to have. So dark she couldn’t even share them with the boy who loved her.
In a truly sweet and loving gesture he planted the flowers to show that even where there has been pain and sorrow, beauty and love can still flourish.
The book, in true Lily fashion, puts it’s characters, and the reader, through the wringer. Your emotions are never quite the same after reading her books.

Genre – Romantic Suspense/ Dark Romance

Goodreads – https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/51472555-in-the-garden-of-discontent

This is a love story.
It’s brutal.
Heart-wrenching.
Dirty, terrifying, and raw.
But a love story nonetheless because it is so beautiful.

Ensley: Noah Carter was the type of guy that every girl wanted.
Gorgeous. Talented. Smart and kind. He was the world that revolved around me even though I didn’t deserve him.
But then something went wrong. He snapped maybe, just lost his mind.I found him the night my family died, their blood staining his hands.
I put him in prison. I got my revenge.
But then years later he found me again…
…and stole me away from my life.
Noah: You couldn’t know Ensley without wanting to strangle her. She was beautiful, she was wild, she was the girl next door. I grew up with her by my side. I watched her destroy herself while I held on. I protected her when she had been blind to the danger that surrounded her. I let her go once only to find her again. She would see me this time no matter what.
DISCLAIMER: This book deals with sensitive subject matter that may be difficult for some readers.

The Vanity of Roses by Lily White

So another Lily White book, and here the Roses in question are actually a family. This was definitely on the lighter end of the Lily scale, more romantic suspense than the usual psychological suspense/romance that she normally torments us with.

Genre – Contemporary Romance / Romantic Suspense

Goodreads – https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/50731598-the-vanity-of-roses

Callan Rose.
That hadn’t always been his name.
When we were children, he was nothing more than a servant boy in my family.
He was an amusement to me.
A nobody.
A weak soul who refused to fight back.
It was so easy to take advantage.
But then my father died, and I was stolen. The family moved on without me. Until I was penniless with no place to go.
I returned to the Rose Estate not knowing Callan was the head of it.
He’d honed his body and temper in the underground fighting ring. The scars only made him more beautiful.
Now I’m trapped by a seductively dark man who has nothing but vengeance running through his veins.

I’d always wanted him to fight back, but you know what they say:
Be careful what you wish for.

Delirium (Atom & Evil #1) by Myra Danvers

Totally cheating with this one, but a fantastic book always deserves a mention. The heroine’s name is Iris, which is a flower, so I’m claiming this one. OMG she is one kick-arse heroine and I either want to be her or snog her, I just can’t decide which.
Unapologetic and strong, she dominates this story. The world building is pretty phenomenal too.

Genre – Science Fiction Romance

Goodreads – https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43882482-delirium?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=8vHlGKeT8Z&rank=3

“We’ll never be done, you and I.” He pushed off her desk. Closed the distance between them with prowling steps, clenched fists, and oh, so much determination. “Too much unfinished business to ever call it over.” He stopped a few steps away from uncomfortably close. Braced his palm on the wall behind her head, forearm brushing the side of her throat. “’Sides”—he licked his lips, glanced down her shirt—“we never got our hate fuck, baby girl.”
Iris knows he’ll come.
He’ll come lookin’ for what she stole, what she refused to give up when everything went to hell. Won’t find it, of course. There’s nothing left but a pipe full o’the good stuff and the dregs of the past that refuse to die.

Do you have 5 books you loved that have a flower theme somewhere in them? If so do share, leave a comment and let me know!

Bookish Friday… Disappointing Books

Bookish Friday – Disappointing Books.

This is a meme created by Laura (https://lauryreads.wordpress.com/) and Georgi (http://nifflerreads.co.uk/), so do please visit them too. Today’s prompt is very apt as over the last few weeks I seem to have had a few lacklustre reads, one of which will feature as today’s Book Review. Some of these books were not terrible, just not to the author’s usual standards.

I’m going to do my most recent 5, since that number nicely with recent reading experiences.

His Human Nanny (Monsters Love Curvy Girls #1) by Michele Mills

Yes, yes with a subtitle like that I should have known better BUT in my defence a Goodread friend had raved about this book. It was described as fluffy and light but enjoyable, especially for the smut content. I never made that part, the heroine annoyed me too much. The lesson here is that I should always make sure I read the blurb, in order to avoid disappointment. Thankfully I borrowed it via KU so no harm no foul.

Genre – Science Fiction Romance

Goodreads – https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53339735-his-human-nanny

My indentured servitude is almost over and freedom is a heartbeat away! Until some alien guy buys me because he needs a nanny, quick. What the actual f@ck? I’m not even good with kids. I’ve never changed a diaper in my life. But the beings at the employment agency won’t listen. “Hew-mans are hot right now. Everyone wants a hew-man nanny.” Great. And since there isn’t another human available… I’m hired on the spot.
Yay, me.
And on day one of my new job I’m having a panic attack because I finally meet my new boss and he looks like Satan himself. No lie. Black horns, red eyes and glinting silver-tipped claws. He even has a barbed tail, a forked tongue, and he breathes fire. This guy is terrifying, and his children look exactly like him.

*heart palpitations* *hyperventilating*
And yet, as I’m caring for these strangely adorable infants and gazing longingly at my crazy-rich boss as he cradles his twin babies in his huge, muscular arms… my traitorous heart goes pitter-patter and my body heats up like lava.
Oh no.
And I begin to wonder — have I sold my soul to the devil?

Wine Hard Baby (OHellNo #6) by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff

This is an author I can usually rely on for a good read, though I have struggled with several of her recent book. I’m not sure if it’s my tastes changing, but I think it is time for me to step down from her arc team. It isn’t fair on the author, because it could well be a case of “it’s not you, it’s me”.

Genre – Contemporary Humorous Romance, Enemies-to-Lovers

Goodreads – https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/50848537-wine-hard-baby

CAUTION: CONTAINS HOT COWBOY. Do not mix with wine. Avoid watching him do shirtless labor on hot days.
SIDE EFFECTS MAY INCLUDE: Feeling of extreme temptation, excessive drooling over his abs, elevated heart rate, and loss of coherent thoughts when in his presence.

My name is Camila Clark. And that sexy cowboy right there? The one with the devilish smile, twinkling brown eyes, and tattoos on his muscular arms? He’s Jed, the guy I turned down flat back in Texas. He just showed up here in Oregon at the winery where I work
.

Mafia Lullaby by Alta Hensley and Measha Stone

I’m not the biggest AH fan, though I do usually enjoy MS’s work. However this just pulled too many punches for my liking. This is a girl, kidnapped off the street and marked for training as a sex slave, yet the worst thing that ever happens whilst in captivity is a spanking and a paddling! I didn’t find this book even a teensy bit dark, and I don’t think such a sweet, happy, caring hero would ever have ended up training the slaves!

Genre – Dark (? I disagree) Romance, Mafia Romance

Goodreads – https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53319152-mafia-lullaby

She’s a Lullaby girl. Her fate is sealed.
In a twisted, underground House of depravity, the women do not belong to me.
But they are mine to train. To groom. To perfect in the most wicked of ways.
This dark House changed me.
What was asked of me, corrupted the man I once was.
But the sickness did not break me.
I remained in control regardless.
Until her.
Cloaked in secrets and lies, I have a new focus…
I want my own Lullaby girl.

The Break-Up Artist (Cupids #4) by Lila Monroe

There was nothing wrong so much as this just didn’t engage my emotions. It was an enjoyable read but fairly forgettable, so much so that I had to re-read the blurb to remind myself of what happened in the book.

Genre – Contemporary Humorous Romance

Goodreads – https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/51597967-the-break-up-artist

I’m an expert in break-ups. From the slow fade, to extreme ghosting, to, ‘but you never said I couldn’t send pics of my junk to your step-sister on Instagram’ – I’ve seen it all… and built a mini-empire along the way. My blog, the Break-Up Artist, uses my past heartache to help people move on – and avoid weeping on the floor at 3am consuming their body weight in spray cheese and Oreos. Ahem.
Now, I have a new job that could mean the big-time: helping a famous Hollywood it-couple navigate their tricky break-up. Except not everyone wants them Splitsville. The movie studio needs to keep them together to promote their big movie, and they’ve sent someone to make sure I fail in my first VIP gig.
Wes Baxter. Also known as my ex.
Also ALSO known as, the guy who broke my heart so thoroughly, I had to turn myself into a self-help guru just to get over him.
I’m determined to follow my own advice (no drooling over Wes’s perfect abs, or remembering how he rocked my world) but being trapped together at a luxe country retreat isn’t helping things… And neither is Wes’s early-morning naked swim habit. Soon, love is in the air, the sparks between us are hotter than ever, and I’m seriously questioning my ‘no backsies’ policy.
Wes swears he’s changed. He wants to try again, and he’s got an annoyingly sexy way of convincing me. But can second chances really work? Or has the Break-Up Artist finally met her match?

Abducted (Sinister Fairy Tales) by K.I. Lynn

I’m possibly being unfair singling this book out, this series as a whole has been more bust than boom. I’ve enjoyed maybe 4 or 5 of the series (out of 15 books so far), so not a great success. Abducted was just very generic, very convenient solutions and far too insta-love for me to believe in that bond. The writing was good but it wa another one where the bad guy wasn’t bad enough and the heroine wasn’t traumatised by being in a completely horrific situation.
That said this was the one I enjoyed most out of these 5.

Genre – Contemporary / Mafia Romance

Goodreads – https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/46259527-abducted

The mafia never lets you go.
I thought I was safe, free, but I never expected to find myself locked in a cage.
I’m in his territory. His prison.
The beast.
A fate worse than death awaits me if I can’t get away, so when the opportunity of salvation presents itself I grab it, even if I’m unsure if I can trust the hand I’m holding.
The only way out is through, exposing secrets and spilling blood.
Things aren’t how they appear. Nobody is what they seem.
Not even me.

Review // The Break-Up Artist

The Break-Up Artist (Cupids #4) by Lila Monroe

The Break-Up Artist is a fun and heart warming second chance rom-com. Katie and Wes were both very likeable, easy to believe in characters, and I loved that Selena was neither entitled or bitchy. The author created a cast of characters that together added depth and colour to the story.

Second-chances are a guilty pleasure of mine, some are better than others. In this one I liked that their original break-up wasn’t cliched. Both played a part in it and though Wes really hadn’t come out of it with any honour he DID acknowledge his mistakes and show contrition. In fact the whole plot line avoided the usual cliches and was very much about BOTH characters growth and learning.

The story is quite slow burn, which worked well with the plot line, but once the chemistry ignited this pair certainly burned hot. I found it easy to believe in their connection and emotions, and really enjoyed reading their story. This isn’t my favourite book by this author but it was still a very pleasant way to spend a few hours.

Genre – Romantic Comedy, Humorous Contemporary Romance
