Top 5 – Enemies To Lovers

Top 5 Saturday

This Top 5 series started back in October 2018 by Devouring Books and it has grown really big! Each week there is a prompt so that you can feature five books that all have a common theme. You can talk about books you want to read or books you have read and all prompts are open for interpretation! Feel free to get as creative as you want with the prompts.

Hmm a part of me just wants to list the 5 books from Cari Silverwood’s Machinery of Desire series, since all the protagonists start of as enemies and end up as lovers. However they are more about captivity and dubiously consented activities, so I’ll leave them for another post someday. Then there is the Fragile Ties trilogy by Jennifer Bene that I have just completed, but again this began as a dark romance so perhaps doesn’t quite fit the bill for this post.

I’ve actually read a couple of really good enemies-to-lovers trope books recently, so I’m going to throw those your way, along with some I read a while back that are not-to-be-missed.

1. The Rebel’s Redemption

I came across Lexi C. Foss whilst reading books in the Cavalieri Della Morte series. I was so wowed by Scarlett Mark, along with a short story in an anthology, that I joined her arc team. Apart from Rebel’s Redemption, all her releases since have been in the PNR genre. However Wyatt and Avery stole my heart and this will always be one of my favourite books that use the enemies-to-lovers trope.

Even rebels have regrets.
Mine has a name: Jamie.

When news of Jean Perry’s passing reaches me, I feel a moment of selfish relief and hope that I might be able to reconcile the most consequential mistake of my life.
There’s only one problem. Her sister. Avery Perry.
The moment I see the way my son looks at her, I’m reminded of a past I thought long buried. There’s more to this arrangement than meets the eye and there’s only one way to learn more.
It’s time to play house.
No feelings. Just observation. And maybe a little seduction along the way.
I am a rebel, after all. And not all rebels are worthy of redemption.

2. Mister Baller

Cassie-Ann L Miller is one of my favourite contemporary/rom-com authors. Whilst her books aren’t always written with a “laugh out loud” style of comedy, there is a gentle humour that flows from her characters and plots. Iris and Jude are a wonderful couple and I thoroughly enjoyed their story.

My college rival. My ex-husband’s best friend. My new roommate? Oh, boy.
The last thing I want is to rent my spare bedroom to my ex-husband’s best friend. His six-foot-three, dimple-faced, alphahole best friend. His injured-professional-football-player best friend. But desperate times, desperate measures, y’know?
I can’t afford to hold grudges. These heaping bills of mine won’t pay themselves.

Keeping my distance from my new roommate should be simple enough. I mean, I can’t stand Jude Kingston. Plus, as my ex’s friend, he’s so off-limits he’s virtually radioactive.
In any case, Jude promises to stay out of my way. He’s just a broken football hero in need of a quiet place to focus on healing his injured knee and saving his lifelong dream. Harmless, right? Um, not so much…
The man is infuriating. He spends his days parading that shirtless, muscle-bound body all around my house. He insists on involving himself in my private business. He has zero concept of personal space. But he also has this boyish, unintentional charm. And this inconvenient way of repeatedly coming to my rescue.
Suddenly, lust is throbbing in every room of this house. Lingering gazes over the dinner table… Sweaty workout sessions on the living room floor…
Stolen kisses in the moonlit hallways… I can’t fight these soft feelings growing roots in my belly. Jude is a vine, slowly wrapping himself around my heart.

But when a piece of my past threatens his entire future, will our love even stand a chance?

3. He Loves Me… Knot

As well as e2l this is also a second chance story – which is a favourite trope of mine. Very often I can’t stand books with a lot of push and pull, but somehow R.C. Boldt had me suckered in and I loved every single moment of Emma Jane and Knox’s story.

I never looked back after skipping out on my own wedding, even if it did leave me estranged from most of my family. Eight years later, I have the life I’ve always wanted. As an advertising account executive, my world is damn near perfect.
Until I come face-to-face with my past. With the man I once loved. The man who holds my future in his hands. The man who’s hell-bent on getting even with me for leaving him at the altar.
Even with all the unfinished business between us, I still love Knox Montgomery. The only problem? He loves me…KNOT.

4. The Lawyer and The Tramp

Carmine is a mafia lawyer, Eva is the woman who repeatedly knocks him down to size. This contains enough grit to feel realistic, without being too gruesome or dark. The sparks really fly between this couple and their story held me spellbound.

He’s an ass. She’s the enemy. It’s hate at first sight.
Carmine Montesi is a killer disguised as a refined lawyer. He’s a loyal member of the notorious mafia – the Chicago Syndicate – and the boss just happens to be his brother. He has wealth, influence, and sinful looks and is rejected by no woman.
Until the moment feisty Eva ruins his New Year’s Eve, when one heated encounter starts an illicit underworld game, placing them on opposite sides.

Eva Conley is an escort. She’s working to make the money she desperately needs to pay an outstanding debt. That is, until he gets her fired.
Carmine’s only supposed to be her assignment. And Eva’s the one woman he isn’t allowed to fall for. Because neither of them can sleep with the enemy and make it out alive…

5. Fraud

The battles between Gabe and Ivy are both funny and heartbreaking. This is definitely a story that proves love and hate are two sides of the same coin.

Eighth Circle. Fraud. Also known as Gabriel Dane.
He is a ray of sunshine that warms your heart with kind eyes and a dazzling smile.
Don’t let him fool you with that silver tongue or lure you in with a body that draws every woman’s eye. This man is fluent in deception and a devil who only offers pretty lies.
Gabriel is my old nemesis. I’m the girl that always fought back. He has every reason to hate me as much as I hate him.
Now that he found me, he’s determined to make me pay for our past.
Except, there are two small details Gabriel doesn’t know that will be his ultimate downfall:
There are no rules when it comes to our war.
And I’ve learned to lie just as good as him.
