Sunday Wrap-Up – November 21st

Each Sunday I will be rounding up my week and linking up with The Sunday Post hosted by Kimberley @Caffeinated Reviewer as well as The Sunday Salon meme hosted by the wonderful Deb @Readerbuzz. Do please pop by their blogs and show them a little love 💗.

Life Last Week

This week was just as hectic as the last one, but thankfully it was also fairly stress-free. A huge thank you to you all for your kind words of support last week, the blogging world is so wonderful. The weather continues to be unseasonably mild here in the UK, we still have a few summer flowers in the garden, despite it being well into autumn.

I had my booster jab, I did have some side effects but they were fairly minimal. A half day of shivering and feeling cold to my bones then a half day of feeling very hot and sweaty is much better than a hospital stay, or worse! I managed to develop an abscess on a tooth, the tooth was already dead but the abscess was still painful. Thankfully the dentist saw me the same day and a course of antibiotics seems to have brought the inflammation and swelling under control. I now have a retained root and tooth that need to be removed and that is planned for the 22nd December – liquidised turkey here I come!

On our walk last week we spotted black smoke in the distance, it turned out to be a fire at a unit storing old lorry tyres. It had just started when we first noticed the smoke, by the time we got home it was drifting across quite a stretch of sky and only got worse as the day progressed. There were 70 firefighters at the height of the blaze, with some of the crews came from neighbouring counties.

Books Read Last Week

I didn’t actually finish a book this week, that hasn’t happened since I got my kindle 6 years ago. I did start but abandon two books and am hoping to finish the third “startee” today.

Dark Desires wasn’t bad, but it just didn’t hold my attention, despite being part of a Buddy Read. It was a freebie so no harm no fowl.

The other book was an arc, the author has taken a new direction so I was hoping a familiar face would ease me into an unfamiliar genre. However I just couldn’t get into the book as I didn’t particularly like the main protagonist.

Currently Reading

Having seen lots of positive reviews for this book, and feeling in need of some festive preparation, I requested a copy of the book from Netgalley. The first few chapters were a bit of a struggle because I found Flora to be irritatingly naïve, pathetic and dense. Perseverance looks to be paying off though as I am definitely enjoying the story more now. It’s totally schmaltzy but isn’t that what Christmas is all about?

Looking forward to…

…more beautiful autumn walks.

… a food and drink festival in our town this weekend.

… it may still be a few weeks away but I can’t wait to decorate the house for Christmas. (There I’ve said the “C” word!)

  1. Too bad about the fire. I have witnessed a few fires as a kid and its pretty traumatic. Love the holiday read @theglobaldig.blogspot.com

  2. It’s the rare week with me when I don’t finish anything. But I find that if I don’t finish anything that week, I do well the next week. Hopefully, that will be what happens with you.

I like the look of Flora’s Travelling Christmas Shop. I’m ready for some light fiction after this month of nonfiction.

Glad you got your booster. We did here, too.

  3. Oh my! The fire looks like it was a huge one! I’m so sorry your community experienced that. I have a group of Christmas books I listen to/read every year and thoroughly enjoy them. 🙂

  4. It’s nice here too mostly, all though it is getting to freezing 0C or maybe -1. This week will be even a bit colder. I am still walking with Lulu almost every day. I’m not quite ready for Christmas and here we have Thanksgiving this week. It’s just the two of us, my daughter and I for both and we are staying home as we have been. We have plenty to do and lots of good books! I love your photos.

  5. Oh no sorry to hear about the tooth issues- those can be the worst! And wow- what a fire! Yikes!

I love that cover for Flora’s Traveling Christmas shop.

I’m looking forward to Christmas, even the decorations. 🙂

  6. Ooo….I had an abscess a few years ago- dreadful pain. Here, they do an immediate root canal and put a crown over the tooth. Sometimes those are painful after the novocaine wears off, and sometimes, not. I can’t take ibuprofen, so I get the good drugs for pain relief 😇 I’m glad you’re liking Flora now that you’ve gotten further into the story. She is a rare delight. Hope this week is better 🤗

    1. I absolutely loved the book in the end and would definitely recommend it. The abscess was on a tooth that had already had a root canal – apparently, my roots were twisty and difficult to “clean out” so left me prone to infection – thankfully the antibiotics worked!

  7. Glad to hear the booster went relatively “well”,it must be a good feeling to know you’re as protected as you can be. 🥰
Shame about the abces, though….and having to go back to the dentist. Best of luck with that! 🤭

Eve Silver’s book is one i tried years ago,and guess what,i didn’t finish it either! 😂
I hope the weather stays like this for a while, even though you’ve already used the C word😉
    Not too cold,not too wet,just perfect😎

    1. I wish I’d known you couldn’t finish the Eve Silver book, I wouldn’t have wasted my time! 😂. So far the antibiotics are doing their job so I’m just hoping for no flair ups before the next appointment.
