REVIEW //\\ Charmed

Charmed: A British Billionaire Romance by
April Wilson and Laura Riley

Charmed is a warm, sexy, funny, well written rom-com, guaranteed to bring a smile to your face AND your heart.

I’m not always the greatest fan of the billionaire trope but this didn’t have that typical arrogant alpha-hole feel. In fact the hero Will was really very sweet and quite down to earth. A really pleasant guy, strong but not overbearing. The story was so easy to read, really enjoyable and it was great to watch how Will grew and developed throughout the book.

The heroine, Skye, was also a really well written, engaging and wonderful character. Both her and Will were very likeable, as well as being very easy to relate to. Her back story added interesting facets to the tale, whilst her strength and integrity added intensity to it.

The plot was fairly simple but it didn’t need unnecessary complication or angst. We were treated to depths of emotion, fantastic writing and great characterisation. I could really feel the emotions and it definitely had a wonderful warm and sexy rom-com vibe. The inclusion of two wonderful support characters in Connor and Kennedy brought something a little extra, allowed us to see Skye and Will in a different light, to really get to know them and to understand them a little better.

This is a really good read and I can’t wait to read more books in the series.

Skye
It was just supposed to be a one-year internship in London.
I wasn’t supposed to meet Prince Charming.
I wasn’t supposed to fall in love.
And I certainly wasn’t supposed to get my heart broken.

Will
Women fall at my feet. They find me—and my bank account—irresistible.
It’s not until I meet a shy American wallflower with an uncanny knack for numbers that I fall, too.

When one of my past mistakes returns with a vengeance, I risk losing the one person who means the world to me.

REVIEW //\\ Stealing Cinderella

Title: Stealing Cinderella

Collection: Sinister Fairy Tales Collection

Author: A. Zavarelli

Release: April 2, 2020

Genre: Dark Fairytale Retellings

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/46260492

Cover Design: Dee Garcia

I’d started to have my doubts about this series, but Stealing Cinderella has certainly turned the tides favourably.

The book has a nice swirl of darkness to it, and is certainly fits the billing of ‘Sinister’ perfectly. Ella and Thor’s story is set in modern times, which made a few elements at the beginning seem a little far fetched, and I did find myself having to let several things ‘go’ at the beginning, hence the loss of half a star. However I can appreciate that not only were they necessary for the story, they strongly echoed the fairy tale on which this book is based. Though this prince is very more devillish than he is charming.

Stealing Cinderella has an excellent plot, well thought through, nicely paced and with some unexpected twists along the way. There are possible triggers in the book, more alluded to than truly experienced, though there is one brief flashback scene that occurs. Ella and Thor have both experienced abuse and neglect, though it has shaped them into very different characters.

Ella is very much the sweet natured, caring and loving Cinderella of the fairytale. Thor, however, has a much darker, bleaker nature and is very much an antihero – to the point that it took me quite a while to warm to him. However as we, and Ella, get to know the true man, as his secrets and hurts are gradually revealed and as he warms towards her, so I found myself warming towards him.

Whilst the Sinister Fairy Tales series has been very hit and miss for me, and mainly miss if I’m being brutally honest, this book has made the whole experience worthwhile.  Ashleigh Zavarelli took the brief and very much stuck to it, producing a story that closely paralleled the original on which it is based. At the same time she modernised the tale, threw in a good dose of all things dark, add a generous helping of steam to create a really great story.

This is one Sinister Fairy Tale I am more than happy to recommend.

Every royal has their dirty little secret. His was… me.

It should have been simple.

Go to the ball, meet the prince, and secure his patronage for my favorite charity.

But beneath the mask, the brooding beast of a man was not at all who I expected.

He was dark and intense and eerily quiet.

When I left, I could still feel the ghost of his touch branded into my skin.

He haunted my dreams, but I never expected to see him again.

Then he came for me.

And he took me.

And I learned that his darkness was a void I never could have conceived.

He’s the crown prince of Norway.

And, now, I’m his captive.

REVIEW //\\ Missing In Action

MISSING IN ACTION by Kate Canterbary

MISSING IN ACTION, by Kate Canterbary, is a full-length steamy contemporary romance standalone with strong ties to the Walsh Series.

💣 Amazon: https://geni.us/miaam

Available in Kindle Unlimited

It was like he expected me to sit here and be a good boy while he showed off his slim, sculpted torso. Like he didn’t expect me to reach out, curl my hand around his belt, and drag him over here so I could like that belly.

The perfect recipe for the ultimate MM romance.

Take one bruised, battered but not totally broken spy,
Add in one sassy, snarky, organised to the nth degree man called Tom,
Blend together with enough chemistry and heat to power a volcano,
Throw in great writing, a sprinkle of Walsh goodness, some sunburn and a wedding.
Shake, stir, shake some more and then sit back and enjoy this masterpiece of romance.

Both characters who have appeared at one time or another in previous Walsh books, Wes is the brother to Lauren and Will whilst Tom is the guy who keeps the Walsh architecture firm running. However you can 100% read this as a stand alone story, though you’d be barking mad to miss out on the rest of the Walsh and Halstead families finding their HEA’s.

His words were easy, almost matter of fact, but there was nothing easy about the hard glint in his eyes. And those eyes, they shone like an endless night. Deep enough that I almost fell in and drowned…

I can promise this book will grab ahold of your emotions, pummel them into submission, make you laugh, swoon and cry before leaving you with all the feels and a hugely satisfied smile on your face. If this book isn’t better than sex it’s as close as anything is going to get to it.

A smile warned his face and it took all my strength to keep from dragging him into my arms because anyone with that much sweet and boyish needed to be held close, held tight. And degraded a bit too.

Don’t like MM? This is the book that will make you change your mind. Love MM? This is the book that will set the bar so high you’ll struggle to find anything else as good. Which ever camp you are currently in, Tom, Wes, their inner struggles, physical and emotional baggage and tender hearts will totally enthrall you. I wanted to snatch this pair up and wrap them up in cotton wool, clutch them to my breast, lavish them with love and hug them until all their hurts went away.

He squeezed my hand again, hard enough to snap my attention away from everything else. “I’ve got you.”

There are moments of humour, from little Abby and her feisty attitude, to Shannon’s salty and full of snark texts, moments that will make you swoon and melt, and others that will cut deep into your heart. These are all tied together into an incredible story, one where you won’t want to put the book down, one where you won’t be able to turn the pages quickly enough, one where you want to get to the end whilst simultaneously never wanting the end of the book to be reached.

My words can’t do adequate justice to this story. I loved it. I highly recommend it. It’s amazing, fantastic, astounding.

and then he kissed me, hard and fast at first but then deep and deliberate, like sucking caramel off a spoon.

..and it was everything. Absolutely everything.

Former Navy SEAL turned covert agent Wes Halsted spent his days—and weeks and months—being someone else. But with his cover blown and his injuries requiring months of recuperation, he must learn how to be himself again.

Only…he’d rather save his issues for another day and get to know a stressed-out, suited-up businessman instead.

Tom Esbeck has everything under control. Meal plans, workout plans, project plans, five-year plans. A plan for everything and everything according to plan.

Except there’s no plan for a surprise—and shirtless—encounter with the built-for-sin spy he’d crushed on years ago.

But crushes—and spies—burn out fast.

but I hadn’t sorted out what I wanted to say to Tom. All I knew was my nose was going to peel like a motherfucker and I was a week overdue for a haircut, and he’d notice both.

Review //\\ Where The Stars Fall

WHERE THE STARS FALL by Ana Simons

**LIVE NOW**

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Cover design by Perrin Brunson, The Author Buddy

I miss you. More than any words could say.
More than I thought I would, ever again.

Where the Stars Fall is a wonderfully written contemporary romance, that takes you on an emotional and heart warming journey. One where Brian and Olivia need to let go of the past in order to allow love into their forever. It’s set in England so be prepared for the alternative word use because the author cracked the dialogue and British ‘accent’/feel perfectly.

This is an updated and improved version of the story found in Falling Home and is a story of an undeniable love. A tale of not giving up hope. An account of learning to trust that when you fall, the other person will be there to catch you. This was very much a book that brings something new to the table and one that was refreshingly different, but good different.

The main thing that marks this out is that it is written entirely from the hero’s POV. I’ve only read a couple of other contemporary romances that have used this process and one of my dislikes was how arrogant and ‘cardboard’ the male MC felt. That was so very much NOT my experience with this story. Brian felt so very human in his thoughts, feelings, actions and confusion. There was no arrogance, only a genuinely nice man who was willing to fight for his forever.

Olivia was more difficult to get a feel for, though clever writing allowed me to usually understand her actions and reactions. I have to say that at one point I *almost* wondered why Brian bothered with her. Olivia almost seemed determined to continually sabotage their relationship and run away from him. However this needs to be balance with her just having left a very toxic relationship, and ultimately I did like her. I do think I’d have felt even more sympathy for her if I’d heard her ‘voice’, but then I equally loved the flow we got from just experiencing Brian’s.

I adored the scenes between Brian and Josh (thankfully my kids never seemed to ask such awkward questions), he is one amazing little boy. Then there were the conversations between Brian and his dad – some of those were really tear-jerking! The scene with Emma and the “knockagoggles” made me laugh out loud and the passion between Olivia and Brian was palpable. This is a book that will make you feel so many different emotions.

“Let’s just cut the crap, everyone lies. Every day. Thing is, sometimes we lie, not because we’re bad people, but because we’re trying to prevent a bigger problem, just that. It’s always a tough call, but the intention is what really counts.”

There are a handful of steamy scenes, though neither too graphic nor crude. Unless you strenuously object to any love scenes in a book then there really isn’t anything in this to offend, other than the odd minor swear word. I’d happily recommend it to those that enjoy a captivating and well written contemporary romance. It is a story that draws you in and holds you, that combines simplicity and complexity so that you simply don’t want to put the book down.

Brian and Livia’s story really is quite wonderful and special.

“Nana told me that when people die, they become stars and watch us from above. We have to find where he is. I need to tell him I can ride my bike on my own already.”
“Let’s do that.”
“What if he already turned into a shooting star? I always wondered where they fall.”
“Into our hearts. That’s where the stars fall, Josh. And then they rest in there forever.”

Even knowing it might be too late to repair what’s been once broken, Brian refuses to lose her again and sets out to find a way back to her heart.

Blurb:

This is a love story.
It’s brutal.
Heartwrenching.
Terrifying, honest, and raw.

But a love story nonetheless…because it is so beautiful.

Ensley:
Noah Carter was the type of guy that every girl wanted.
Gorgeous. Talented. Smart and kind.
He was the world that revolved around me even though I didn’t deserve him.
But then something went wrong.
He snapped maybe, just lost his mind.
I found him the night my family died, their blood staining his hands.
I put him in prison. I got my revenge.
But then years later he broke free and stole me away from my life.

Noah:
You couldn’t know Ensley without wanting to strangle her.
She was beautiful. She was wild. She was the girl next door.
I grew up with her by my side.
I watched her destroy herself while I held on.
I protected her when she had been blind to the danger that surrounded her.
I let her go once, only to find her again.
She would see me this time no matter what.

Excerpt:

“I hate you,” she hissed, hair wild around her face like it always had been.
“I know.”
Her body shook, and her shoulders wilted, arms curled around her body, fingernails digging into her skin. “I need-“
“I know,” I said, stepping forward to grab onto her so she wouldn’t have to say it.
Our eyes met in the shadow of that room. “You don’t need to say it. I know.”
I’ve always known…but I couldn’t do anything about it.
Ens melted in my grasp, like water through my hands, trying to slip away and escape so she could damage herself in some way I couldn’t stop, but I wouldn’t let her.
Not this time.
Not again.
Gripping my hand over the back of her head, I pulled her to me, my mouth locking over hers, tongue risking the clench of her teeth because she would fight me tooth and nail while this happened, but that’s what she needed.
To fight me.
To injure me.
Because she had never been able to fight them.
Fingernails cut into my biceps, her body thrashing to break free, but I held on and kissed her like I was giving her the air she needed to breathe.
Shoving Ensley down on the bed, I grabbed the back of my shirt to strip it off, every muscle in my body tense because I knew I was a bastard for wanting this.
For wanting her.
For taking advantage, even though it had never been my intent.

Book Review – Lumi by Elin Peer

LUMI (Cultivated #3) by Elin Peer

A difficult and heart breaking path to a truly beautiful love story.

I adored Lumi and Damien’s story, which is told both in present day along with clearly defined flashbacks to the past. This allows a well paced reveal of many untold and unknown events that have shaped the people they are today. Once started I didn’t want to put this down, the excellent writing and engaging storyline kept me hooked. The emotions pour of the page and this was definitely a “box of tissues” read.

There were times when I would have liked to have felt more emotion from Damien, mainly in the past and particularly following his first night with Lumi. His decision, which I understood, didn’t come with enough angst and soul searching to convince me of the depth of his feelings at that time. He seemingly made his decision too easily . However in the whole scheme of things it was a minor wrinkle in an otherwise amazing story.

Lumi and Damien are both well written, rounded characters. Neither was perfect and Lumi in particular had issues to work through. The concept of the forced physical (but not sexual) intimacy was a really interesting plot device, providing drama and tension alongside some truly thought provoking moments. The story never felt cliched or predictable.

Elin Peer ‘s flawless storytelling is a joy to experience, her finely crafted characters are both believable and likeable. She totally convinced me of the strong connection between Lumi and Damien, as well as the depth of their feelings. She also teased us with both Nathan and River’s struggles, leaving me desperate for more of this family.

Damian took a bullet for me when I was seventeen.
He didn’t ask for my heart in return, but it’s been his ever since.
We are as different as night and day. He’s fun-loving and outgoing while I’m skeptical of new people and prefer to avoid social events.

So, why did I agree to be handcuffed to him for a full week in the name of science? It’s not because he dared me to do it, or because I need the money that comes with it. I’m the CFO of Solver Industries, after all.
It’s because I’m turning twenty-nine, and I’m sick and tired of my heart comparing every man to Damian when my brain knows full well that he’s far from perfect.

If my plan works, an overdose of the large Irishman should kill my crush on him and finally set me free.

Lumi is the third installment in Elin Peer’s psychological drama series, Cultivated. Readers rave about Elin Peer’s ability to make the characters jump off the page and stay in your thoughts for a long time after you close the book. If you love romance with depth, a fast pace, a bit of steam, and some great dialogue, then you’ve found your next read.

If you’ve already read the first two books in the series, Charlie and Atlas, then this is a no brainer. Buy Lumi on pre-sale and have it delivered straight to your Kindle App the moment it goes live on Amazon on Valentine’ day February 14th.

VOYEUR – REVIEW

Voyeur (Voyeur, #1)
by Fiona Cole

This wasn’t as erotic or dirty as I felt the blurb led us to believe and, to be honest, that was why I picked this up! However, despite this actually being more of straight up contemporary romance I still really enjoyed it.

If you’re picking this up hoping for some very erotic scenes you will be disappointed. There are actually very few visits to the ‘viewing rooms’ of Voyeur, one of which involves the H and h so doesn’t really count. Really the only ‘point’ of Oaklyn working there is so that it can lead to conflict between the two main characters.

I didn’t end up with the filthy, one-handed- reading type of story I was expecting. Given that I’m not the biggest fan of ‘straight’ contemporary the fact that not only did I finish this but I also enjoyed it is testament to some great writing.

Oaklyn and Callum’s story really held my attention. It’s so much deeper and more complex than just a student-teacher taboo story. There are layers and layers to this book. There are issues to be resolved, pain to bear and tough decisions to be made. Flowing through it all are some incredibly deep emotions, I was nicely surprised by just how much this book made me feel.

So despite it not being the book I originally expected, it turned out to be a book I very much enjoyed reading.

I didn’t know she was my student the first time I paid to watch her at Voyeur.

Once she walked into my classroom, another smiling college freshman, I knew I should stop going. Stop watching.

But I couldn’t do it. Everything about her makes me want more, and once I realize she wants me too, the temptation becomes irresistible.

The worst part is that she has no idea her professor is the one watching behind the glass.

I just have to hope that once she finds out the truth, she wants the same thing I do. Because now that I’ve seen all of her, I can’t look away.

Fighting For This

Fighting for This: The Last Resort Motel
by Gwyn McNamee

There is just something very special about Aurora and Max. Their story is compelling and perfect to snuggle up with on a dreary Sunday afternoon when you need a delightful pick-me-up read.

The story is very much set in the present, so whilst I knew who they were as people now (and what wonderful characters they are), I had very little idea of what had shaped their lives. However it’s a novella, so I can’t expect that type of depth when there is also a ‘suspense’ sub-plot.

I’m not normally a fan of insta-love, and technically this isn’t that, since the ‘L’ word isn’t bandied about. In fact Max is very clear on them focusing on the here and now, rather than the long term. But they do make some life altering plans and their mutual connection, passion and attraction was so incredibly well portrayed that I would have been fine HAD they declared they undying love for one another.

So in summary this is a great read, sexy, fun and with a hint of danger.

The desert’s secrets are beautiful…and deadly.

AURORA
Max Lawson doesn’t belong here.
The California surf boy has no business being up Spruce Mountain or anywhere near The Last Resort Motel.
There can only be one reason he’s hanging around—to search one of the old mines in hopes of striking it rich.
And as soon as he’s done, he’ll be gone fast enough to make my head spin.
But Max brings more than just a danger to my heart.

MAX
Aurora Clayton is the last thing I expect to find at The Last Resort Motel.
What in the world is a girl like this doing in the middle of nowhere, Nevada?
Search the land I inherited and get back to California—that’s the plan.
I never expected to find something here even more precious than silver.
But someone else is after what’s down that mine shaft.
And I’ll do everything in my power to protect what I’ve found, including Aurora.
