REVIEW //\\ Fortune Fae Academy #1

I could be tempted to be as cruel as the author, and give this book zero stars just because of how terrible she was for leaving the story at the point she did. How can I function, how will I ever sleep, what will I do until the next book is released?😉😂

This ends on the cruelest of cliff-hangers but even so it is 100% worth reading this book. I love Gina, Zeke and Rowan, I’m undecided on Axel and I currently loathe Seif with passion that borders on insanity. I started off with pity and sorrow for him, since the core of his quest was built on the very best of intentions, however his total disregard for anyone other than himself, his unrelenting pursuit and treatment of Axel and Gina, soon made me dislike him. A lot.

Then the hulking brute would do something nice, something that felt almost honorable, and my feelings would waver. Sadly he would then return to being that arrogant, self-centred, thoughtless posterior-hole that left me wanting to skewer him with a rusty fork. Until that man shows an inkling of empathy, emotion or care for someone other than himself he can rot in the blackest, most remote edges of the web for all I care. In fact that’s far too good a fate for him at the moment. There is a huge part of me that is kind of hoping Gina escapes him, though I’m sure by the end of the series I will have made a whole 180 flip on that and will adore the very ground Seif walks on. And won’t that just encourage the insufferable alpha.

God I love a book that makes me feel. And this had that in spades. It has sweet moments, angry moments, happy moments, anxious moments and despairing moments, all of which combined into an amazing must read story. Gina is so strong, so independent and so determined to avoid a dire fate. She is tough, resourceful and caring and you can’t help but love her. Zeke and Rowan are amazing and the perfect Beta’s for this Omega. The glimpses we got of Axel at the very beginning of the story did endear him to me, though his treatment of Rowan knocked that sideways. I need to see more of his pov in the next book to help me get a true feel for him.

The story is one roller coaster ride and it hurtled at break-neck speed from the very start of the book. It’s not even a quick read, and by the end I felt as though I’d been dragged through the mill, but in the best way possible. I will warn that this Gina and her mates don’t actually get to the Academy until almost the end of the book. There is one heck of a lot that happens before that point – and all of it is good. I may just have a slight book hangover from this unputdownable story!

I never asked to be an Omega.
I’m a Fortune Fae—I see the future. But I didn’t see this coming. My Alpha will stop at nothing to possess me and has dragged me all the way to Fortune Fae Academy to join the other wide-eyed Omegas-in-training. He believes I’ll survive–and I hope he’s right. He also believes I’ll kneel at his feet. He couldn’t be more wrong about that.
I don’t need three broody Betas and an asshat Alpha telling me what to do. When I graduate the Academy as an ascended Omega, I’m rejecting my mate-circle and getting the hell out of here.
Except there’s one slight problem. My Alpha has seen the future too… and he knows something I don’t.

REVIEW //\\ The Devil’s Soldier

Wow what a twisty read this was. Written in dual pov we had so many nearly moments between Lucian and Eve, but life, magic and Boaz seem determined to keep this pair apart. This is a rewrite of a book originally released under the authors other pen name, Rachel McClellan and it was the one where I felt the most changes had been made.

In my original review I’d felt a lack of emotion and hadn’t believed in the depth of the connection between Lucian and Eve – my word that was no longer true. You could feel the sparks from the electricity this pair generated. I was totally convinced of the passion, longing and love between them. The emotional battles they both endured was exhausting but in the best way possible.

The book will break your heart at times, have you on the edge of your seat at others and will keep you wondering about just what will happen next. Some books I’ve read recently felt a little stale, they failed to capture me, this one thoroughly entertained me and I can’t wait to read the final part of this story.

“My silence is not weakness, but the beginning of my revenge.”

Lucien

Eve is gone. They took her from me.

I will have my revenge.

So I train. Hone my body and my mind.

But rage burns in my veins. Fuels my anger.

I let it fester and grow to use against him:

The Devil’s Soldier.

I will destroy everything he knows.

Eve

The world believes I’m dead. It’s the only way.

For now, I hide in the shadows.

Growing stronger, more determined.

For the Devil’s Soldier must be stopped.

And I will stop him!

Only then can I be with the man I love.

REVIEW //\\ The Devil’s Angel

The Devil’s Angel (Devil, #2) by Raven Steele

A great follow up to The Devil’s Fool.

This second installment of the series was just as twisty and action packed as the first, an equally good and captivating read. This time we see events through Lucian’s eyes, he is a much darker, more severe character so expect some angst and anger as you read this.

The plot was really well thought through and the story flowed well. It was impossible to pick out what was new and what was original, the author did an amazing job of blending the two together. Despite them being supernatural creatures, Eve and Lucian’s actions and emotions are very believable and I found it very easy to empathise with them. The constant pulling away by Lucian could have become annoying and definitely would have been, had we not been “in his head” and experiencing his thoughts, feelings and emotions.

The developing relationship between Eve and Lucien is beautifully woven through this tale and I really enjoy how this author writes a really rounded story. She mixes just the right amount of description, action, intrigue, passion and dialogue. The suspense builds well and I found myself wondering who you could (or couldn’t) trust in the story.

I really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend this series to those who like a good paranormal/supernatural tale with a nice side of romance threaded through. This does end on a cliff-hanger but the next updated book will be out very soon and I that will definitely be on my TBR list when it is.

“There’s no other heart for me but yours.”

I am a demon of the night.
A monster who craves blood.
Who yearns for the hunt.

She came into my life.
Upset my world.
An angel with hell’s power.

I wanted to hate her.
To destroy her.
Kill her goodness.

Then she made my heart beat again.
Showed me how to live.
Loved me.

But she doesn’t know what I’ve done.
How I bathed the world in blood.
Changed history.

My past will come for her.
Try to destroy my angel.
But I won’t let it.

The demon inside me must be unleashed again.

REVIEW //\\ Noir Reformatory

Noir Reformatory
by
Lexi C Foss and JR Thorn

I’m a little torn on my rating for this book, it had great writing and good world building, scorching hot sex scenes and three engaging characters but I just felt that, at times, the plot was a little lacking. There was too long spent wash, rinse repeating the same stuff, and whilst I enjoyed what I read, I also felt like I wasn’t always really getting anywhere either. Where as this would normally drop my rating to 3 stars, this book is just far too good for that, so I am rounding what would otherwise be a 3.5 stars up to 4.

It would have made sense if this time had been used to develop the males into two very distinct characters but, to be honest, at the end their personalities still felt far too similar. One of the heroes even spends a couple of weeks being tortured, none of which we got to witness. We didn’t have one scene from his time at this mad woman’s hands, not one moment of seeing him survive by thinking of his friends, dreaming of Raven, or just being damned determined not to let the bad guys win.

At times it felt as though this was erotica, with the focus more on sex than story. There are many authors that I would expect and accept that from, I guess I’m just used to something a little more complex, more sophisticated and just all around “more” from one of these authors. It’s still a really good read, a fun and interesting story that held my attention easily from start to finish.

Even though this is a stand alone novel that will have follow up stories featuring other protagonists, I didn’t quite feel as though Raven’s story was wrapped up. I still have questions, some which could be answered via other characters, but some of which I really need to have answered FOR and BY Raven and her guys. That said I do still recommend this to paranormal romance readers, especially if you love a lot of MMF action.

Happy Birthday, Raven. Welcome to Noir Reformatory.

Not what every girl wants to hear on her 18th birthday, but I accepted my fate long ago. Once my wings turned black, I knew I’d be stuck behind bars.

A Noir Angel for life.
That’s fine.
I’ll own this prison just like I did back home.
Even if it’s ruled by two hot kings.

This reformatory isn’t all-girls; it’s co-ed. Which means I’m outnumbered ten-to-one by brutes with more brawn than brain. Not a problem. I thrive on aggression and this place is riddled with it. A nightmare wrapped up in an ebony cloak.

Well, bring it on, boys.
Just try and claim me.

Note: This MMF romance novel is part of the Paranormal Prison collection and the start of a brand new “Why Choose” series by USA Today Bestselling Authors Lexi C. Foss & J.R. Thorn.

Review //\\ Shadowlands Sector

My first read by this author and definitely NOT my last – especially as this one ends on a cliffie!

I came to this story via Andorra Sector by Lexi C Foss. We briefly met Dusan there, though Mila Young’s clever world building and dissemination of information means you don’t need to read that to understand and enjoy this. The small number of chapters in this did make me wonder how the author was going to convincingly write a reverse harem story in the available time, so I’m glad it isn’t stand alone. So despite being absolutely desperate to know what happens next, I’m glad that this is going to be a longer, more complex and developed tale.

I LOVED Meira. A strong heroine, who might have been inexperienced in terms of contact with others, but she sure knew how to look after herself. Dusan needed to earn her affection, after all he had ‘stolen’ her from her life, one that she was perfectly content with. I liked how the pair did forge that connection, and loved that Dusan ultimately gave Meira the ability to choose freely.

Another thing I really appreciated, was how the author wove a story and set of circumstances that, both for Meira as well as the other females, made their capture a blessing rather than a curse. It pushed dub-con boundaries but was definitely the lesser of two evils.

I couldn’t read the book quickly enough and was totally captivated by it, falling in love with both Meira and Dulsan. Personally I needed to see a little more of Lucien with Meira, that part of the story line felt just a little bit too rushed for my liking. However I’m sure there will be plenty of opportunity to get to really know him, and Bardhyl who I suspect will prove equally important to the story. It was surprisingly slow burn, but when the flame did ignite boy was there a heatwave. SCORCHING.

This author’s fantastic writing, great characters and brilliant storyline has definitely found her a new fan.

They call me an outcast, weak.

I’ve fought my whole life for survival, running from an attack on my family I ended up hiding with the Ash Wolves. This one move might be my biggest mistake of all. And I’m the queen of mistakes…

I let them believe I’m broken, let them believe the lies. I let them believe anything they want…as long as it isn’t the truth.

There’s a monster inside me, one made of teeth and claws and terrifying need. I swallow it down, hiding under the pretense of being normal. But I’m not normal. I’m anything but.

Bonding is the only thing that will save us—me and the Ash pack. Only I need someone strong enough to fight the darkness inside me…and savage enough to stay.

Will the three ruthless alphas help me…when they find out the truth of what I am?

This is book 1 in a shifter paranormal romance story for those who love strong protectors, wolf shifters, and steamy scenes.

Review //\ The Devil’s Fool

As a child, teen and young adult I read voraciously, with Science Fiction and Fantasy eventually topping the list as my favourite genres. 3 children in fewer years combined with a lack of available funds meant that reading for pleasure became a very occasional treat. As with many things, NOT doing something became the habit, and for a long time I was doing well if I read more than 5 books a year – and most of those were holiday reads.

Then for Christmas 2015 I got a Kindle, and haven’t looked back since. It rarely leaves my side. It’s my new best friend, my comfort blanket, my support in tough times. Ok maybe I’m exaggerating their but my family do believe I am addicted to it! Now there is a point to this ramble, that being that one of the first authors I discovered with my brand new, shiny, and much loved Kindle was a book by Rachel McClellan called The Devil’s Fool. I enjoyed it so much I quickly bought and read the remaining books in the series.

Well Rachel McClellan now writes her urban fantasy/ paranormal stories under the pen name Raven Steele, under which she has recently re-written and re-released The Devil’s Fool. I had the great pleasure of reading this story and loved how she cleverly linked it to her Rouen Chronicles series.

A great start to this tale of the paranormal, politics and power

I very much enjoyed The Devil’s Fool , in which we see Eve led on a path to her (almost) destruction before finding redemption in unexpected places. Do be warned, there are times when the heroine, Eve, is quite an unpleasant character, behaving in a reprehensible and selfish manner. However the story was gripping and, despite some very stupid choices , overall found myself really liking Eve. I think it helped knowing that she was going to repent some of her decisions and find the light that she was always searching for.

This is very much a journey of getting to know Eve, along with watching her chose her future. The story ends at a natural break point rather than cliff-hanger, though there are still a fair number of lose ends that need to be tied up and mysteries that will hopefully be solved. I will definitely be reading the remaining books and can’t wait to see more of the mysterious Lucien.

The book contains hints of romance and a few mildly steamy moments, but this are no graphic scenes, so this is suitable for older teens and adults. The writing is absorbing, the characters engaging and the plot captivating. A great read for those who like a good urban fantasy read.

“I was afraid of the dark until I became it.”

As the daughter of a magical family, power bled through my veins.
The desire to control.
Manipulate.

It lived in my blood, handed down from generations of witches.
They expected me to be the same.
Subtly rule over humans, bending their will to ours.

But I wanted to be free of my family’s dark world.
Their crimes and murders.
I wanted to be more.
Be different.

Boaz, a powerful vampire, saved me from my parent’s suffocating grip.
He promised me the world.
Seductive.
Bewitching.

I craved him.
His power.
His strength.

But the devil’s in the details.

And even he was once an angel.

Book Review //\\ Fortuna Sworn #1 & #2

Fortuna Sworn by KJ Sutton

Wow I loved this book.

My late teens and early twenties were spent reading sci-fi and fantasy written by the likes of Anne McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey, Katherine Kerr, Andre Norton, Julian May and David Eddings. That is were I learnt the patience of waiting for the next installment in a series, where I learnt that a cliff-hanger is not something to be feared but can be a thing of beauty and fell in love with all things fae.

K.J. Sutton is a new-to-me author who has instantly secured a slot on my “must buy” list. The story of Fortuna Sworn reeled me in and kept me on the edge of my seat. It took me a chapter or two to really get into the story, but once I did this became a book that I didn’t want to put down. In fact I became most irate when trivial things like work, kids needing food and sleep got in the way of my reading it.

This is a twisty tale of a Fallen one, a Nightmare, a seemingly normal girl with a hidden ability and her battle to rescue her brother. Damon has been missing for two years, when Fortuna discovers he is being held by an Unseelie fae she is prepared to do anything to win his freedom. That anything involves a mysterious fae who turns out to be a heck of a lot more important and powerful than Fortuna could ever have guessed.

Fortuna will face trials and battles that will stain her soul as dark as the blood she must shed. Those battles of wit, intelligence and cunning are woven into a complex tapestry of a story, one where you can never be sure if the person in front of her is friend or foe. Added into the mix is the mystery of Oliver, who should be just a figment of her imagination but who seems more real than it is possible for him to be.

Whilst Collith seems to be the forerunner as her love interest, there are hints at other possibilities too. The book is fairly slow burn and the sex scenes were fairly tame, making this a suitable read for older teens and upwards. I would recommend this to fans of Pippa DaCosta, Kate L Mary and Lexi C Foss, or anyone looking for a well written fantasy/paranormal story. I LOVED it and will be jumping straight in to reading the next one. I just hope book #3 is finished soon!

Restless Slumber by KJ Sutton

Book #2 of the Fortuna Sworn series and I am now totally invested in these characters.

Goodreads shows the author is planning another 4 books and they can’t come soon enough – though I did see book #3 isn’t due until the end of the year 😭. Please don’t be one of those people that “waits until the entire series is out” to buy them, because authors don’t continue if the books don’t sell. (You can always buy them and wait to read but do buy them!)

I’m not sure if this is shaping up to be RH or not, nor I would care if it did. Let’s face it Collith, Laurie and Oliver are all amazing men and why would you want to choose between them? Not forgetting Finn, who we haven’t really learnt to much about but hopefully that will change in the next book. And that last scene between Oliver and Fortuna? Oh my word I’m welling up again just thinking about it. Is it normal to cry over a fictional character that is also supposedly a figment of another fictional character’s imagination? Though Ms Sutton keeps hinting that there may well be more to the situation than might first be assumed.

I have The Jonas Brothers’ What a man gotta do running through my head whenever i think of Collith and Fortuna. And Oliver and Fortuna. And maybe Laurie and Fortuna too! And didn’t my heart poor heart just splinter into a thousand pieces for Fortuna in this book, especially with the decision she had to take at the end of the book.

Then there are all the other great characters Lyari, Damon, Zara, the cafe crew, Savannah and Matthew etc that just add a richness and depth to the story. Nobody is in this book without a reason, without somehow becoming part of the plot and story. How the author keeps everything straight in her head amazes me.

Oh and one final thing – she had better not be thinking of killing off any of those three men that I have fallen madly in love with. I just keep feeling like that might happen and if it does, well you’ll probably find me rocking in a corner, sucking my thumb and muttering incomprehensibly. Only able to make out the odd phrase such as “how dare she?”, “terrible woman” and “never forgive her”.

Book Review – Midnight Fae Academy #1

MIDNIGHT FAE ACADEMY #1
by Lexi C Foss

A reverse harem, bully (enemies-to-lovers) paranormal romance.

5+ Stars

Wow, this book will grab you by the throat, push you up against the wall and seriously f**c with your mind. And you’ll enjoy every moment of it.

This felt almost like a bully romance at first, poor Aflora was treated so badly by both Shade and Kols. I totally and utterly wanted to throat punch them both. But then we start seeing another side to each guy and they rather grew on me and along with Zeph they make great partners for Aflora.

There are so many mysteries swirled together and just as one strand unravels, and we learn something new, another puzzle pops up to take its place. I was utterly captivated and completed the story in one sitting. Just couldn’t put it down, desperate to read the next page and find out what would befall our beleaguered heroine next.

Aflora is a very gentle and kind soul, but that isn’t to be mistaken for weakness. She’s thrown totally into the deep end of life at the Midnight Fae Academy without even a kiddy arm band to stop her drowning. This is a culture that clearly believes in being cruel to be kind, or perhaps they’re just arrogant, thoughtless dicks. I’m still not sure if I like Shade, if I bumped into him in the street I might just poke him in the eye on Aflora’s behalf. Kols and Zeph grew on me, sometimes like a bad spot that you wanted to lance, but grow they did.

I only hope that Lexi C Foss is busy writing because I really, really need to read book 2. Like read-it-yesterday need to read it.

A forbidden bite led to my capture and recruitment.
There are no flowers here.
No life.
Only death.

I’m an Earth Fae who doesn’t belong here.
They can play their little mind games all they want, but I’m going to find a way back to my elemental world. Even if it kills me.

Except Headmaster Zephyrus is one step ahead of my every move.
Prince Kolstov won’t stop cornering me.
And Shadow–the reason I’m in this damn mess to begin with–haunts my dreams.

My affinity for the earth is dying and being replaced by something more sinister. Something powerful. Something deadly.

The Midnight Fae believe this is my fate.
They claim that I was “recruited” for a purpose.
To battle a rising presence.
Or to die trying.

I don’t owe them a damn thing. But if I have to pass their trials to find my way home, then so be it. I survived a plague and far worse in the Elemental Fae realm. An ominous energy? Please. What a joke.

Give it your best shot.
I’m waiting.
And don’t you dare bite me.
Or I’ll make you regret it.

Author Note: This is a dark paranormal reverse harem trilogy with bully romance (enemies-to-lovers) elements. Despite Aflora’s opinions on the matter, there will definitely be biting. Shadow, aka Shade, guarantees it. This book ends on a cliffhanger.

Some demons just refuse to stay down…

In a moment of sheer, unthinking terror, Rosemary McGuire raised powers she never knew she possessed to save herself and Will Gordon from the part-demon, Caleb Lockwood. Now, as Will heals and the police ask questions she and Will dare not answer, more facets of Rosemary’s power begin to manifest, leaving her wondering exactly how far they reach.

Caleb got away with the hard drive that contained footage proving demons are real, but there’s one blessing — no one died in the fiery confrontation. At least, that’s what Rosemary and Will think…until Caleb’s body turns up, and the police stop looking for a perp and start seeking a murderer.

With suspicion floating around them, Will and Rosemary are drawn closer together as they follow a faint wisp of a clue to track down the stolen hard drive…and step straight into a hornet’s nest of demons hiding in plain sight.

That’s not all they find. The closer they get to their goal, the more twists and turns arise to trip them up, threatening a future they’re just beginning to envision. Unless they stop the ghosts — and the demons — of the past from destroying it.

Not only does K.F. Breene crow bar a humongous amount of plot, funnies, smexy time, action and adventure into this book, she also throws a huge side serving of heart break into it too. It’s one of those books that you shouldn’t start reading just before bedtime, because there is NO WAY you will be able to put it down after only reading a few chapters. No sir-ee, once started this book will sink it’s claws into you so deeply that you won’t want to put it back down until you have read and savoured every single word.

Kieran, Alexis, Daisy, Mordecai and all the other amazing characters that inhabit this world, both real and spirit based are all absolutely amazing. There are so many different people and each one has their own distinct and unique voice in the book. Some are likeable, others immensely loveable, whilst a handful are vile and despicable beings but they all have depth and personality by the bucket full.

I never know where the story will take me, I never even begin to suspect what surprised are in store and what curve balls will be thrown in my direction. I do know that I will love every moment of it, even when I hate what is happening, even when my emotions are being stomped on, because the writing is so fantastic and the story so amazing that I can’t help myself.

I can’t wait for Sin & Lightning, I’ve already got it on pre-order.

The fourth book in the Amazon Charts Bestselling series by Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author, K.F. Breene.

Kieran has stepped up to take his place as the ruler of magical San Francisco. As his girlfriend I’m in the spotlight, and the Hades Demigods have taken notice. They want me on their team, and they don’t plan on asking nicely.

Kieran and I are both under fire. They will kill him to get to me, and they’ll take me by force if necessary. It is essential I learn more of my magic.

With no other options, I do what scares me the most – I summon the last Spirit Walker to help train me. Except, he’s a loose cannon with looser morals, and learning spirit is treacherous. I might evade the Demigods only to be lost in spirit forever.
