Resistance (The 1000 Revolution #6) by Pippa DaCosta

My body is a hollow shell where my heart and soul used to reside before it was cruelly ripped to shreds by the talented Ms Pippa DaCosta.

Resistance can NOT be read as a stand-alone story. At the very least you need to read book #5, though to be honest even that might not be enough and why would you want to deprive yourself of four other books of Caleb filled deliciousness?

There were a great many things about Caleb Shepperd I liked,
and none of them were logical.

One, Resistance by Pippa DaCosta

Oh One, when will you finally get to be free? Please don’t let it be out there amongst the stars, on your own. And Caleb, life really has dealt you a crappy hand but despite it all there is still a really good guy underneath all the tarnish and bluster. And the rest of the guys all deserve their own little slice of peace and happiness.

After my reluctant nod, Fran piloted the ungainly Starkiller to the shuttle’s coordinates with all the skill and finesse i’d expect of an ex-fleet commander, although I’d never tell her that. Her ego was already big enough for the both of us.

Caleb, Resistance by Pippa DaCosta

Beware, once you step aboard the Starkiller you are in for one heck of a bumpy ride. Up becomes down, left becomes right and enemies become, well, if not quite friends at least temporary allies. This book gave me all the feels, every single damn one, including several that were not welcome, not at all (#passmethekleenex, #uglycry).

Whilst previous work by the author may have inferred intimacy between characters, this was much less subtle in its honesty. Whilst there are no very intimately graphic scenes, we are aware that some characters may get to bump their uglies.

This kiss was nothing but a meeting of mouths and tongue, but it didn’t feel like nothing. It felt like safety, and comfort, and warmth. It felt like home.

One, Resistance by Pippa DaCosta

The ending left me spinning alone out there, amongst the stars, in the black. I’m fairly certain it’s obvious from my random mumblings that this story has left me with one HUGE book hangover, and I’m still not quite sure how I’m going to process it.

Count the stars…

Listen… I need you to know… you saved me in all the little ways. There ain’t no power in the nine strong enough to stop me from saving you back.

Caleb, Resistance by Pippa DaCosta

This book left me senses a-reeling, heart shattered and emotions pummelled. I simply had no words, no words at all, for a while and could only express my thoughts and feelings via gifs. I’ve included that here because – hey it wasn’t easy given the fragile state of my mind at the time. So for the more visual learners amongst you here is my 0riginal review that I posted, whilst I cobbled together my broken psyche.

So I started out feeling all

and that quickly progressed to

We will pause here for a while, rocking quietly in our corner, possibly sucking our thumb and definitely sobbing into a handkerchief.

Yes the author did THAT author thing. I should have seen it coming, she’d dropped enough hints on her FB page but I stupidly didn’t think she would be so cruel!

eventually this led to

and a bit of

Yeah. I just can’t at the moment, but you DO need to read this and join my in my strange mix of misery and joy. I’m still not sure if I’ll ever forgive the author though.

“This shit is why you always kill the bad guy.”
Wanted dead or alive by the law and every criminal this side of the jump gates, there’s only one place Caleb and his crew can hide:
Jotunheim.
All the crap in the Nine systems washes up there.
With their rustbucket tugship Starkiller about to cough its last space-mile and credits scarce, raiding a few scrappers rigs is a last resort. Scrappers are hard bastards, but then so is Caleb.
Stealing from the bad guys should be easy, if Caleb’s crew can get their shit together. The pressure is on. Trust is a joke. And then there’s One. New and improved but just like her old self? Or not…
One says there’s a revolution brewing, and she’d know.
Synthetics move among us, their strings pulled by a mad man. The Nine Systems teeters on the edge of a war it can’t see coming, and Caleb’s crew might be all that stands in its way.
Sometimes it takes bad guys to kill bad guys, and if Caleb’s crew have learned anything together, it’s how to be bad.

REVIEW //\\ Blade

Blade (Dark Monster Fantasy #3) by Cari Silverwood

Where can I get me a Ledderick? Preferably the mollok version please.

This author claims she doesn’t intentionally include humour in her books. The sheer fact that one of the supporting characters is a sarcastic, talking sword tells you that his book is going to be great fun.

“Smorg.” He sat forward, “You have a point.”
“I always have a point, that’s the whole point of swords.”

Ledderick and Smorg, Blade by Cari Silverwood

We first met Ledderik, a cyborg assassin, in Prey , however Blade can easily be read as a stand alone, anything you need to know is included in this book. He has lost his way and signed over his body to the Last Of Life organisation, only he finds a new purpose just as his time runs out. That purpose is Thorn, a genetic disaster waiting to happen. What follows is a kinky adventure involving lots of planets, the borrowing of various alien bodies and a lot of shooting (both of guns AND other things ).

A cross between a car, a mini-tank, and a superhero accessory this four-doored scarified-pink and black fleetjer could outdistance and outgun most opposition and do it in style.

Blade, Cari Silverwood

Thorn always thought she was a S’kar, a species that would much rather avoid the whole messy business of sex. Until recently Ledderik had been a cyborg with no sexual organ. There’s a lot of fun to be had learning new things. Oh, and just better hope those hovering adbots don’t have on-board camera’s – goodness knows what they might find to film!

And damn this uniform for being so corruptible by these psionic powers of hers. Thank the gods, it only showed randomly glitching pixels. If she ever started texting on her clothes she was truly doomed.

Thorn, Blade by Cari Silverwood

This is just one amazingly fun, very naughty and fast paced read. First and foremost it’s a sci-fi adventure, with an actual ‘quest’ to fulfil, a princess to rescue and I’m sure Smorg mentioned something about a ring. It’s a lot more erotic, if not down right smutty, then your traditional science fiction read and you won’t hear me complaining about that. I loved how inventive Ledderik could be. Who knew tentacles could be such fun?

With his mastery of torture, he could see this, sex, being a natural addition to his skill set. He never did anything by halves.

Ledderick, Blade by Cari Silverwood

I absolutely adored that last chapter, I was totally caught out by that little twist at the end, lol! Do I recommend this book? Only as much as sentient ships and talking swords make great partners. That’s a massive yes by the way in case you were wondering.

When irresistible force meets irresistible girl more than sparks will fly – fur, spiky bits, and possibly tentacles.

Ledderik is a slightly homicidal cyborg and is ready to lose himself in a virtual world for the rest of his tomorrows, until he saves Thorn from death and gets sucked into the wake of her cataclysmic siren attraction.
Maybe life can be fun?
Besides, she has such a cute … tail.

One small problem, Led no longer owns his body.

Thorn has also lost everything in one day. Cross out being a starship captain or her own species, or having friends. Instead she’s been cursed with being a hurricane force sexual magnet.

She has questions.
Why is she a biohazard on most reputable planets and how can she avoid triggering an extinction event and killing every male nearby? The two of them cross the galaxy, with Led swapping from loaner body to loaner body.

He’s the one male who can resist her, and he’s upskilling.
Up against the wall? Upside down? With tentacles and DD drilling power? Led is good at what he does. Always.

Meet the hot ex-cyborg who no longer looks in the mirror, in case his latest loaner body is ugly. He has one priority – make sure the downstairs department is BIG.

Warning. This story may contain robots, cyborgs, dark naughtiness, and species that come equipped with extra wriggly bits.

Blast From The Past Review //\\ The Last Dominant

THE LAST DOMINANT by Eris Adderly

I read The Last Dominant in January of 2019 and it was my first introduction to the brilliance that is Eris Adderly. I still need to catch up on some of her back list, but then isn’t that entirely the story of a book addicts life? To many books, too little time.

Amazing world-building, an engaging plot, a dominant male and some hot, kinky sex.

Well if that isn’t enough to make you want to read the book, what’s wrong with you? To many dark sci-fi romances forget the whole sci-fi part of the story, they are virtually no different to a contemporary romance. This didn’t suffer from that failing. We had some really good world building and a love across the divide theme.

Quillian and Rushkah should be mortal enemies, their planets have been at war almost forever it seems. However they have more in common than would first appear, including some fairly rare DNA from which the title of the book originates.

I absolutely loved Rushkah and Quillian, neither was perfect and both battled their feelings for the other. The chemistry they shared was palpable and this is one steamy and kinky read. Quillian discovers a hitherto unknown dominant side and whilst Rushkah’s head rebels at the idea, her body, soul and heart have very different ideas.

The story is written third person from both POV’s, so I found it easy to connect to and understand both characters. The plot held my interest and moved with good pace. It had enough detail and thought put into it to satisfy the part of me that has read sci-fi and fantasy for over 30 or so years.

If I was to criticise anything it would be that some parts of the story could have done with a little more fleshing out. The book didn’t lack detail but this was one occasion where I think a few more scenes, or longer scenes would have actually added to the book. However that is very much a case of what I personally would have liked, this is still an excellent story and one I really do recommend.

“I can have whatever I want. I own you.”

Qillian Wehr is the last of his kind. A bloodline of unspeakable power.
To the Imbrian government, he is a weapon. A last resort in their age-old war with Rhyolus.
His leaders want insurance. They want an heir.
 They need a genetic match.
 And now, they’ve found her.

Exotic. Stunning. Lethal.
Rushkah Ekhayl would murder Qillian in his sleep if she got the chance. She’s Rhyolusian. She is his enemy.

The Last Dominant is a scorching enemies-to-lovers romance where a taste of treason unlocks desires of submission and control. For mature readers only.

Publisher’s Note: This steamy sci-fi thriller contains elements of power exchange.

REVIEW //\\ The Messenger Chronicles

Happy April the first, though I don’t think many of us are particularly in the mood for April Fool’s Day. I’m still beta and arc reading at the moment so have dug through my head for a book or series that totally captured my heart, to share with you. The Messenger Chronicles, by Pippa DaCosta, is a slow burn, space fantasy reverse harem series of 5 amazing books.

The story kicks off with Shoot The Messenger, where we meet Kesh, a simple messenger, Marshall Kellee, Sota, an AI ball of fun, and also Eledan, the Dreamweaver. And when the dreamweaver is involved can anyone trust what is real or know what is imagined?

SHOOT THE MESSENGER

“Oh! What A Tangled Web We Weave When First We Practice To Deceive”

Pippa DaCosta has woven together sci-fi and fantasy to build the richly complex world in which Kesh, Kellee and Talon reside. As the story builds we gradually learn more and more about Kesh, Kelly, the fae and tek. I preferred this to an ‘information dump’ as it added to the twisty plot, suspense and sense of unease.

The book is written first person and entirely from Kesh’s point of view. Kesh is just a simple messenger, caught up in someone else’s battle, or is she? Oh my word, this is an onion of a book, made of layer upon layer of amazing story, action, adventure and mind-blowing plot twists. The blurb really doesn’t do the book justice BUT that’s to ensure the element of surprise. And there are surprises galore in this book.

It’s one of those stories that is impossible to properly review without giving away spoilers, and I really want to avoid them so that you get the full impact of the book, like I did. If you have read other books by this author then you will know some of what to expect, but this far surpasses any of her work to date. It takes all the best elements of her previous stories, polishes them up, adds extra glitter to them and twists them into something else altogether. If you haven’t read her books (a) why not?  you’re missing some amazing stories and (b) this is really well written, drags you into the story and doesn’t let you go, leaves your head reeling in the best of ways and will have you begging and howling for Book 2 so that you can continue the story.

A standing ovation to the author for this awe-inspiring, mind-twisting, a-m-a-z-i-n-g read. I need to go and lie in a darkened corner to mull over this book and recover from the book hangover I now have.

“Lies aren’t her only weapons against the fae…”

In the Halow system, one of Earth’s three sister star systems, tek and magic—humans and the fae—are at war.

Kesh Lasota is a ghost in the machine. Invisible to tek, she’s hired by the criminal underworld to carry illegal messages through the Halow system. But when one of those messages kills its recipient, Kesh finds herself on the run with a bounty on her head and a quick-witted marshal on her tail.

Proving her innocence should be straightforward—until a warfae steals the evidence she needs. The fae haven’t been seen in Halow in over a thousand years. And this one—a brutally efficient killer able to wield tek—should not exist. But neither should Kesh.

As Kesh’s carefully crafted lie of a life crumbles around her, she knows remaining invisible is no longer an option. To hunt the fae, to stop him from destroying a thousand-year-long fragile peace, she must resurrect the horrors of her past.

Kesh Lasota was a ghost. Now she’s back, and there’s only one thing she knows for certain. Nobody shoots the messenger and gets away with it.

A new space fantasy series where the guys are hot, the perils are many, and one rebel messenger holds the key to the survival of the human race.

Please note this series contains alternative relationship dynamics

GAME OF LIES

Enter this world at your own risk, for once in you will not want to leave.

Pippa DaCosta has an extraordinary skill for building strange and wondrous new worlds. Add to that her unfailing ability to imbue such life into her characters that they become your friends, and you have a truly magnificent story. The twists and turns of Shoot the Messenger had me spellbound but I knew without a shadow of a doubt that Game of Lies would build upon that foundation and journey me to places I never even suspected could exist. And oh what a fantastical journey it is.

You really need to have read Book 1 of the Messenger Chronicles to fully understand and appreciate this part of the story. The book picks up virtually where Shoot the Messenger finished, with Kesh, Kellee and Talon aiding an escape attempt by the humans who had survived the Fae massacre of Halow. Of course where there’s Fae, there’s usually Kesh, and where she goes trouble follows.

I can’t put into words how much I loved this book. I had some reading commitments but kept finding myself sneaking back to this so that I could read more of it. It’s truly addictive, with plot twists that put a high speed roller coaster to shame. I squealed with glee at having correctly suspected the return of one character, normally being able to guess makes the book feel predictable but the panache and plot pirouettes that the author uses just added another layer of depth and intrigue to the story. The move this character took near the end of the book broke my heart just as much as it did Kesh’s, though I don’t doubt that there are reasons and solutions to this set of events.

This is one of those books where it’s difficult to say anything without giving away spoilers, but I can tell you how amazing the interactions between Kesh and Talon are and how moody and intense
are the scenes between Kesh and Kellee. Oh and Talon in that bath, I admire Kesh’s self control, I don’t think I would have resisted the temptations on offer. I love how as one secret is revealed another mystery blows in, as one problem is solved another emerges to torment Kesh. I loved how Kesh started to believe in herself and her emerging ability to trust others. I’m sure there will be plenty more agony and confusion for Kesh before the truth emerges and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

Despite being a reverse harem the story has a minimal amount of sexual content, I can’t say I noticed any bad language either. That said it still felt pretty steamy at times and is definitely more ‘lust inducing’ than other work by this author, though I’ve always had a soft spot for Caleb. I recommend this to anyone who wants a really spell-binding story to read and doesn’t mind it being part of a series.

The Messenger rocked your world, and now she’s back. But have her lies finally caught up with her?

Trust doesn’t come easy for Kesh Lasota. She survived life as a slave, survived the Dreamweaver’s touch, but surviving Marshal Kellee and the mysterious Talen is a whole other game, one she’s not sure she’s ready for.

When the three are captured by a bloodthirsty fae general sweeping through the last of Halow’s human colonies, the only weapons they have left are lies. And so Kesh must pretend to be the gladiator they all expect, while Kellee is forced to fight against her, and Talen is… Well, just who is Talen when he can command soldiers with a glance and move among the fae elite as though he belongs?

Trust doesn’t come easy for Kesh Lasota, neither does love. She must survive both, or everything she’s fought for will be lost forever, including her men.

THE NIGHTSHADE’S TOUCH

Just as things start to look up, just as Kesh and Kellee and Talen and Arran are building bridges you do that to me?!!!

GAH! Those cliff-hangers (because only Pippa DaCosta would be so cruel as to have more than one!) that you left us with. You give with one hand and then not only take with the other but hit us over the head too! The journey Kesh is taking us on is not a simple nor easy one, but it is one that is so very worth the time and effort. I read this book both wanting to know all it held in store for me, and yet not ever wanting to get to the end either.

He had probably been looking for an opportunity to hit Kellee for centuries.
Most people who knew Kellee wanted to punch him.

Oh the secrets we learn, the lies that are told, the plans that are made and remade, the trust that is given or broken. This book has layer upon layer of story that is slowly being peeled away to reveal secrets and truths you would never even have guessed at. The heat level was ramped up, as was the intrigue, mystery and peril.

Oh and Sota – he was just so funny and sarcastic!

“Duly noted. Now can we focus on the Faerie map and not Arran’s buns?”
“Is this a hypothetical question?” Sota asked.
“No!” I laughed.

This isn’t a stand alone book, it can only be understood after reading both previous books. Though be warned this series is massively addictive and so full of mind-f**ks that it has a deliciously dark edge to it too. Whilst this is a reverse-harem book, it most certainly isn’t full of sex and erotica. There are several steamy encounters but they are an organic part of the plot, enhancing the story rather than being the story.

I watched Kellee and Arran spar for strictly professional reasons.

This author’s writing continues to be amazing (and evilly twisted too), her tale held my attention from the very start to the end. You can’t read this half-heartedly, there is far to much happening and far too many Easter Eggs to find, for that. If you haven’t started the series yet, then go do it. This is my top fantasy/sci-fi read of the year.

“How come I’m here and not your entourage of Buns, Dark, and Icy?”
“Buns, Dark and Icy?” I shook my head at her wicked grin. “Never mind, I don’t want to know”…

Be careful which star you wish upon…

The unseelie–banished by Oberon long ago–are stirring awake, and there’s one name on their dark lips: Nightshade.

Kesh is beginning to settle into her role as Halow’s messenger, saving people from the fae with the help of Kellee, Talen, Arran and Sota, but if she has any hope of making her wrongs right, she must trust those around her. Without them, there is no messenger. Friends, lovers, more. But one has a secret. A secret so dark it threatens to change everything Kesh believes in. A secret that could change the fate of Faerie, Halow, and all of humanity.

When the fae abandoned the stars long-ago, they left behind more than fairytales.

They left behind their monsters.

The fae-in-space “mind-blowing” bestselling series continues in The Nightshade’s Touch, Messenger Chronicles #3

PRINCE OF DREAMS

Oh what an ever increasingly tangled web…… but who are the ones trapped in its sticky strands and who is the spider waiting to pounce on it’s captured prey?

Kesh, Kellee, Talen, Sota, Hulia, Arran, Sirius and Eledan return in this penultimate adventure of the Messenger Chronicles. Kesh, Arron and Sirius are on Faerie, playing a game of truth, dare or lie with both Oberon, King of all Faerie, and Eledan, the Prince of Dreams. Heartbreaking promises are made, truths are twisted and hearts are made and broken.

Kesh continues her battle to free all those oppressed by Oberon and the Fae, but without Talen, Kellee and Sota, will she have the strength to resist the temptation Faerie will weave? This is fast paced, action packed, full of intrigue, lies, plots, plans, highs and some shocking lows. Oh Ms Dacosta you are a cruel author who loves to toy with your readers emotions. Not only did she do that but she eviscerated them too.

The world building is phenomenal, the planning and plotting of both the characters AND the author will leave you spellbound. I wish I could say this was a one sit reading, but with its length of well over 6 hours, and the demands of life, I couldn’t manage it in one go. That said, it most certainly held me hostage, living in my mind in between those times where I could immerse myself in this magnificent creation.

I loved getting more of Kellee’s point of view, as well as seeing that the old adage of absence and the heart was true. Though there is yet more skulduggery by Ms D when she cruelly snatches away that which he has so recently only grasped ahold of.

Added into the mix we have some very lustful and steamy scenes that totally added to the emotional impact of this tale. By the end of this I was left feeling as though the Wild Hunt had ridden roughshod over me. I’m almost scared to read the culmination of this tale, not to mention sad that the story will be coming to a hopefully (though you never know with an author who obviously has a very devious and mean streak) happy and blissful conclusion.

But as Kesh has, to her great sorrow, learnt, nothing comes that easily.

“Oh what a tangled web we weave…”

Kesh fled Faerie as a queen killer. Now she returns as the Faerie King’s secret obsession. But on Faerie, nothing is as it seems, not even Kesh herself.

With days to stop Arran’s execution and the stoic guardian, Sirius, as her constant shadow, Kesh must weave her lies deep within Faerie’s courts where magic and whispers combine and conspire. Soon, Kesh learns there is more at stake than Arran’s life. Faerie is dying. Oberon’s reign is crumbling. The time to strike against the fae is now. But with Talen and Kellee a thousand light-years away, Kesh knows she cannot succeed alone…

Beneath the courtly politics, the glittering facades, and the King’s fragile hold on his people, the Dreamweaver is locked in eternal slumber, dreaming of the day his Queen of Hearts will set him free… because he knows, Kesh has no other choice.

Kesh survived the Dreamweaver once before. Now all she has to do is control him.

But Faerie’s Dreamweaver has other ideas for the peoples’ Messenger. He knows who, and what, Kesh really is and he has every intention of using her to make all his dreams come true.

He takes your mind, makes it his, takes your soul, makes you cruel.
Dare you answer the Dreamweaver’s call?

HER DARK LEGION

Her Dark Legion is the final book in the series, and it just about destroyed me. You have been warned!

Discovery is worthless without the journey.

This book took me quite a long time to complete, it wasn’t because I wasn’t loving every heartbreaking and soul crushing moment of it. It wasn’t because it didn’t have me riveted by it’s amazing plot, outstanding world building and unparalleled characters. It was quite simply that I wasn’t ready, and indeed am still not ready to let go of this world and say goodbye to Kesh, Sota, Kellee, Talon, Sirius and even Eledan. The conclusion to what has been an epic tale was full of action, adventure, tragedy, manipulation and surprises.

I wanted to cry in her {Hulia’s} arms, but I somehow pushed the swell of emotion down.

KESH, Her Dark Legion

Well Kesh, at that point you did better than me because I spent a good half of this book either finding a quiet corner to sob in or with tears streaming down my face. The emotion from each and every main character tore me apart. Again. And again. And again. I have tears welling in my eyes even now, and feel a strange mixture of both joy and sadness.

I wanted to hear his voice, one last time. I wanted to feel his touch on my face and his kiss on my lips, and I never would.

With lines like that how HOW am I meant to remain an in-charge capable adult woman? Impossible! Every single time it left me a snivelling mess. This book was everything I wanted and more. So much more. A whole universe full of stars could not shine as brightly as this story, nor would be able to bear adequate witness to do this book justice.

We could make it happen, together, just as he’d always believed. The Messenger really had made a difference.

And those guys of Kesh’s, wow did they pull out all the stops in this concluding book. There was absolutely no doubt about the depth of their feelings for her. Each of them, in their own way, worships the very ground she walks on, loves her to the stars and back and would do anything within their power for her.

“It’s all right.” His knuckles brushed my cheek, then his fingers stroked my hair, setting it right, like he needed everything to be in it’s place.
Nothing was
all right. I was so tired of the pain, the endless battle.
His lips brushed my forehead. “He took what he thought was most precious to me…” Talen’s warm fingers captured my chin, his gaze fierce. “He was wrong.”

“Where’s your star, Kellee?”
“Right here, in my arms.”
The words broke me open, exposing everything I was and had been.

“Will you love me?” I whispered. “Not the names or the myths and legends, just me? Just Kesh?”
His dark lashes shuttered his eyes, and for a terrible second, I thought his fear had a hold of him again. Then he opened his eyes, and the man was there, his beautiful gaze soft once more.
“Always.”

I mean, talk about *swoon*. But then we had the reminders that all these men were immortal whilst Kesh, with a piece of the Pole Star inside her, was very much mortal. A fact that came very close to breaking those men on more than one occasion.

I needed that for us all, needed a moment with each of them before the moments were all gone.

These impossible males would not be mine forever, but while I had them captured in my mortal hands, I’d love them wholly and completely. No matter what happened after, we would have lived and loved. It would be enough. It had to be enough.

Thankfully there were some wonderful moments of banter and humour to lift the spirits. These usually involved Sota and Kellee, though it wasn’t exclusively their gig. And they just served to make the poignant moments even more touching.

“Hulia has a tail,” I added.
He tripped and caught himself.
“Really?”
“I haven’t seen it, but she’s intimated a few times.”
His eyes widened. “I need to see it. Do you think she can open jars with it?”
I laughed.
His expression switched toward curiosity, then he twisted to catch sight of his own ass, circling on the spot. “Do you think I could get one?”
“Aren’t you content with ten fingers?”

“If that stick were any farther up his ass, he’d be scaring crows,” Sota muttered, sauntering past us.

“You’re going to need a bodyguard who can kick fae and human ass with style and without prejudice.”
“That role’s taken, Sparky.” Kellee stretched his claws.
“With
style, vakaru. You look like someone’s rabid hound.”

Kellee rolled his eyes. “I liked Sota better when he was a murder ball.”

His gun ports smoked. His tek eye glowed, but his mouth wore a modest smile.
“He was about to launch into a villainous monologue and ain’t nobody got time for that.”

Now whilst I’ve fallen in love with all the main characters, even going so far as to have a soft spot for the much misunderstood (IMO) Eledan, my favourite has always been Marshall Kellee. It’s just something about his wild west lawman ways and his dark good looks.

“Oh really?” he drawled in that smooth voice he liked to unleash on unsuspecting females.

Yep, that’s the guy I’m talking about. The one who only needs to quirk an eyebrow to have the panties of all females in a 20 mile radius melting. Not just the females either! We really got to see all the true depths and many facets of Kellee in Her Dark Legion.

For the first time since I’d met him, his expression was open and raw, letting me see everything on his face.
Marshall Kellee was afraid.
For Me.

The weight behind the blow was enough to topple him. His head struck the banister on the way down, knocking him out cold. Now we had ourselves cargo that didn’t argue.
“That was unnecessary,” Talen remarked.
“Probably,” I cracked my knuckles. “But it felt real good.”

Throughout all the trials and tribulations, intrigue, schemes and manipulations, Kesh continued to battle her way towards the final showdown. Weighed down with the expectations of Fairie herself, the hopes of the saru, the fears of her males, Kesh fought with everything she had. Gave everything she had, prepared to sacrifice everything for those she loved.

Outside, rain pattered on leaves, stirring up the garden’s sweet scent and Talen’s magic. He crushed me close and kissed me like he could save me. If love could save lives, ours would. Just not my life.

I climbed the steps onto the deck and planted myself between Kellee’s simmering presence and Talen’s icy stillness. We watched the fleet and the stars behind, and I wished I had more time with them, just to stand and watch and be in the moment.

Wrapping him in my arms, I held him close and listened to the beat of his immortal fae-heart, to the rhythm of his breathing, committing his soft hardness to memory. Maybe he’d listen to my heart, and hear my breathing, and he’d remember me. Perhaps, in his memories, I could live forever.

I’ve used far too many quotes and I just don’t care. I could have chosen a hundred more. There are just so many lines that punched me in the gut and tore my insides apart. These are ones that I just couldn’t leave out.

I told myself I wouldn’t cry.
And I’d failed within seconds.
This was what he’d wanted. He’d chosen this. I would respect that. I didn’t own him. I didn’t own any of them. They’d always been free to follow me, but Talen …. I’d loved his honest, gentle heart and kind words.
He’d encouraged me when I was low. He’d loved me when I thought I wasn’t worthy. He’d never hurt me and never would. Talen was a better person than any of us.

..his destiny, one I wasn’t part of , called to him. He turned away, and with every step, my heart stuttered. I wanted to call him back. When he paused, I grasped at the idea that he wouldn’t leave, as wrong as it was. He turned, tarnished gold star in hand. He looked at that star, emotion passing over his face, and then he stepped up and pinned it to my coat. Meeting my gaze, he nodded once, assured he’d done the right thing, and then he left.

The next words she muttered almost too softly to hear. “I can’t lose him as well.”
After she’d left, Sirius and Sota lingered with me in the quiet, their thoughts likely along the same lines as mine. There wasn’t enough time left to love her how we wanted.

And to finish, a quote that sums up the current state of my heart.

I almost couldn’t speak, and when I did, the words were just a whisper.
“It felt like goodbye.”

“I’ve come too far to surrender now…”

Eledan’s nightmare has been unleashed upon the worlds and with Oberon gone, only the messenger crew stand in its way.

Kellee, Talen, Sirius, Sota, and Kesh. Together, they are stronger, but there are forces on Faerie who do not want the worlds saved, forces that would see the Messenger and her crew torn apart.

Queen to Faerie’s new king, Messenger and more to the saru, lover to some and a weapon to others, but who is Kesh Lasota really? A guiding light or an unwitting puppet?

Answers are coming.

The time for lies has passed.

And Kesh will soon learn some battles can’t be won alone.

The mind-blowing Messenger Chronicles comes to its explosive conclusion in Her Dark Legion.

CYN (Beast Horde #3) by Cari Silverwood

Cute but psycho indeed!

Humans kissed things better. A demon girl needed to kill things to make everything better.

Cyn

Cyn is the third and final instalment of this tale of Beasters, Ghoul Lords and nanites. And what a story it is, filled with exciting exploits, bemusing bots and deadly demons. It kicks off with further shocking discoveries, including the fate of both Willow and her lover Mads. Next, it hurtles along with the pace and determination of a runaway express train, ploughing through what most would consider ‘nice’ and ‘polite’ and leaving devastation in it’s wake. Let’s face it though, Cyn, Rutger and Vargr are never going to be nice and polite, nor we wouldn’t want them to be.

Whilst no-one in their right mind would EVER call the author’s work comedy, she does imbue her books with humour and tongue-in-cheek pop culture references. And they are such clever little touches, often thought provoking and frequently providing both extra layers and depth. There is so much foreshadowing too, when I re-read her books I find myself constantly wondering how I’d missed such obvious clues, easter eggs and signposts. Yet there is NEVER anything typical, predictable or cliched about her work. In fact Cari Silverwood has a fairly unique literary ‘voice’, one that makes so many other authors seem pale by comparison.

It must be close to seven PM now, in old pre-invasion time. Or would it be six? There’d been daylight saving back then, and time zones, and other shit that no longer mattered.
It was Beaster Time, when the Ghoul Lords feared to tread.

On to Cyn and her two Beaster warriors …..hmmmmm, so dark, dirty and sexy as all hell. This trio are just so perfect, each adding their own little spin to the dynamic. Fitting together perfectly and loving each other uniquely. There are more incredibly hot, naughty and definitely perverted sexy times too. I’ll never look at a beer bottle the same way again.

If this was Fetlife or Facebook, she’d have to write in the relationship box: Complicated.

Cyn

The book is also full of great and inspiring speeches, involving ashtrays, hood ornaments and bots keeping your soul safe (I didn’t cry at that one, you did). It was packed with great thoughts on osmosis, build-a-bear, dwarves and their beards and feeling grumpy. Then there were all the little finishing touches like fair-haired bobble heads in blue suits, Dali paintings and tentacles.

Cyn faces some incredibly tough choices in this book, choices that might change her beyond all recognition, changes that might damn her soul forever. Will she rise to the challenge, can Rutger and Vargr keep her safe and when she encounters someone she once cared for will she make the right decisions?

“I might get nasty. I wish I knew for sure if I could keep being human, I want to still be me.”
Was she whining to the little bot? Yes, she was.
“I can help you, Cyn. Please. I will tell you if you are nasty.”

Cyn and Mo

There is so much packed into this book it felt as though I’d read a whole series by the end of it. You can’t afford to let your focus drift for even a second, every word, action and observation has meaning.

You do need to have read Vargr and Rutger , in that order, first. This is not a stand alone read and will not make sense if you try and read it as such.

There were probably worse side-effects one could have. Death, for example.

They are legends and myths made flesh and bone.

Cyn, Vargr, Rutger, and the beast horde know what they are and where they came from, and the source of their experimental DNA is both mind-blowing and frightening.

Yet one of the three is wracked by monstrous changes.

As for the Ghoul Lords… their eyes are slowly opening, for the beasters are their first worthwhile foe for thousands of years.

Will Cyn, her lovers, and the beast horde be enough to save humankind?

This apocalypse should be a whole lotta filthy, violent, and smutty fun.

All of this trilogy is now published.

Exquisite Possession (The Machinery of Desire, #4)

Exquisite Possession
(The Machinery of Desire, #4)

by Cari Silverwood

I’m featuring a ‘blast from the past’ review today. Cari Silverwood is, without a shadow of a doubt, my favourite author to read. I just adore her unusual mix of sarcastic humour, filthy depraved kink and incredible sci-fi.

It’s difficult to compare her work to another authors – she has such a unique voice. However the best I can do is say Douglas Adams but with dub-con, whips and bondage sex! There are also times when she is clearly channeling the spirit of the dearly missed Terry Pratchett.

There quite simply isn’t another author who can make me snigger at her subtle wit, get very hot under the collar (whilst also occasionally cringing in terror) at her kinky sex scenes and stand in awe of her superlative world building skills.

Fast paced, filthy, funny, frenzied and fabulous. An exciting, humorous and often thought provoking conclusion to this epic series.

I’m probably (OK definitely) going to take a while to get to the crux of this review, so I’m going to lay down now how much I LOVED this book, how gripping the story was, how fabulous the characters were, how hot the sex was and how sad I am that the series has ended. Whilst this can be read as JI and Fern’s stand alone story, reading the series will give you a better understanding of where all the other characters fit, along with how and why certain events happen.

I fuck therefore I am. He would rewrite Emery’s ideas on what made a self-aware AI.

JI/Osta, Exquisite Possession

Acquired Possession , book #1 of the Machinery of Desire series was my first ever Cari Silverwood read. (Actually that’s a slight fib, My Romance Curse was the first but since that was written on a whim and a dare I’m not counting it here.) I saw adverts for that book, downloaded a sample and immediately 1-clicked to purchase the book as soon as I got to the end of the sample. I haven’t looked back since – I’m still not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing 😉

“Girl,” he sucked in air. “This was my best idea. I hope you and Aunt M have a better one.”
Now to return to feeling lost and despairing.
It seemed late in life to take up biting his nails.

JI/Osta, Exquisite Possession

Each book in the series has brought something new to the story of Aerthe and it’s inhabitants. Each tale has opened our eyes to a new facet of what life is like for its people. They’ve also contained some downright filthy and perverted sex scenes, and boy are they wonderful to read. Now normally I’d be bleating on about the amazing world building skills of the author, but in Exquisite Possession she took things in a different direction. We had a story that looked inwards at what makes us human and what constitutes a good or a bad person, rather than focusing on the outwards.

Still learning how to human … Some days he seemed a cross between her perfect Dom and a teenager.

JI/Osta and Fern, Exquisite Possession

JI/Osta was a mechanoid, a sentient robot for want of a better description. He took over a ‘human’ body (or technically a Scav body) in Book 2 of the series. Fern is a human, dragged through time and space, otherwise known as a portal, to become a blood slave to the Mekkers. Only Fern stabbed the judge who ruled that they weren’t ‘sentient’ enough to have rights and ended up being ejected from their landship broken, battered, bruised and close to death. So it’s fair to say that both characters come with a fair bit of baggage.

The first part of this book focuses on JI and his battles with the fantasies he has about Fern. Fantasies that include pain, humiliation and domination. Fantasies that just perhaps Fern might have too.

With a thrill to top what already had grabbed his balls … he realized Fern could be his experiment. His little experiment on sex.
Little being more due to her size compared to his, not to what was possible. Because there was
everything. Possibilities seemed endless. He, an ex-mech with control of a girl.

JI/Osta, Exquisite Possession

JI goes through a lot of soul searching, but it never felt too introspective or naval gazing. Usually because CS would always drop in some of her wonderful humour when things started getting a little too serious.

“I would never hurt you more than you want,”

JI/Osta, Exquisite Possession

This was much more of a love story than any of the other books, possibly with the exception of Blue and Sassik’s story. It still retained dark edges and some very extremely kinky play, some of which involved the surgical implantation of blunt spikes around a part of JI’s anatomy. However JI was always far too caring to ever truly be a bad man, and given Fern’s traumatic past he was the perfect hero for both her and us. That didn’t stop him from using the connection both he and Fern had with the mechlings to his own benefit.

“Is a part of you still Osta? The thinking part of you?”
“No. I’m not him at all. I told you that.”
He wanted to ask her if that would scare her more than she could bear but didn’t dare to. Because the answer might scare him.

JI/Osta and Fern, Exquisite Possession

The second part of the story is more ‘traditional’ sci-fi action, if being strung up naked on the nose cone of a war ship, your body pierced by countless wires, could ever be considered traditional. Like all truly great books, lots of strands and easter egg clues all wove together to bring a very satisfying ending to this amazing series. Did I also mention that there is a lot of very hot, kinky and lust filled sex?

BEASTE HORDE #2

Rutger (Beast Horde #2)
by Cari Silverwood

Vincent barreled past her, his billowing red satin robe making him resemble a sumo wrestler with a skin problem. She prayed he wore underwear beneath that.

Cyn, Vargr Beast Horde #2

I love me a good horny horned beaster…..

Hot, dirty, wicked, filthy, depraved, witty and snarky, all tied up (or should that be bound) with whatever chains, rope or suitable material is to hand. Rutger continues the story of Cyn and her two beasters, with the same great world building, crazy pop culture references, perverted sex scenes and brilliant fast-paced plot that we found in Vargr.

The story telling is outstandingly amazing, I never expect anything less from Cari Silverwood truth be told. Her characters are so believable, but more than that they say/think exactly the same thoughts that pop into my head as the plot unfolds. Her writing keeps me gripped from start to finish and never ceases to amaze me with it’s ingenuity, it’s uniqueness and it’s sheer brilliance.

There are so many massively signposted easter eggs, but try as I might my poor brain couldn’t interpret them until the end, when I had one of those huge “oh my word, now I get it and I’m embarrassed because it’s now so obvious” moments. My advice is to pay attention to anything red. 😉 It’s also one of the most brilliant plot twists (devices?) I’ve read in a long time, coming from so far out of the left field that it took me totally by surprise.

We fell in love with Vargr in the last book, for me Rutger really got a chance to shine in this one. As another wise reader mentioned (I’m looking at you Gabriela!) this pair are “both sides of the same coin”. Cut from the same cloth but sewn together in slightly different ways. Vargr is quieter, more restrained and deep thinking, which can make him appear a little remote, Rutger is more open, more free in his emotions, less repressed and seems to just “get” Cyn. However both of them have a seriously kinky streak, that also runs (slightly?) on the gleefully sadistic side. Which is fantastic because it leads to some very, very scorchingly hot sexy times.

I’m now waiting very impatiently for the last book, Cyn.

A post-apocalyptic romance.

The Ghoul Lords threaten the extermination of all humankind and much of our world has been destroyed. There will be love, death, and dirty, messy sex among the ruins.

Sex is what keeps a girl like Cyn from going insane with the blossoming light of dawn, for daylight brings the Lure.

A brutal act by Cyn tore apart the lovers and now she must make amends. She’s going to need her well-muscled beaster males to rein her in, pin her down, and make sure she shoots in the right direction.

Gather your weapons. It’s time to descend to Ground Level and find Big Daddy, the research vehicle lost during the invasion. Within must lie the truth of the Maelstrom experiment.

What she and the beasters were created from will determine the fate of our world.

Contains rough, intense sexual scenes.
This is not a standalone romance and the previous book, Vargr, must be read first.

4 STARS – BOUND

IT’S TIME TO GET BOUND!

Bound By Fate by USA Today bestselling author Maddie Taylor IS LIVE!

A fantastic start to this spin of series – 4 STARS

If you read Maddie Taylor’s Barbarian Mates series, you will already have (briefly) met Beck and Adria. You don’t need to have read those books to enjoy this one, though they do give a little more background/insight into Terra Nova and why it is so important. Whilst Bound by Fate is most definitely a stand alone read, there is a story arc/mystery/peril that will continue into future books.

I loved that this had all the wonderful world building of the BM series, whilst also very much having it’s own plot and feel. I had wondered if Beck would assume a more Primarian demeanour but he was very much an equal rights and consensual-in-all-things human male. And what a hot, sexy male he is, Adria is one lucky girl.

Both main characters are not only likeable but very natural and easy to relate to. Despite being set on an alien world their story felt so utterly believable. Amid all the intrigue, peril, purple skies and colonisation of a planet this was, at heart, a beautiful and finely crafted tale of love. It was so easy to believe in the passion between Beck and Adria, to accept and feel their emotions and love.

The execution of the story is excellent, the plot flows smoothly and is easy to follow, the dialogue is natural, the pace is quick enough to hold your attention but also allows time to explore things in depth. I am only to happy to recommend Bound by Fate to those who love a well written romance and enjoy stories with a sci-fi setting.

About Maddie

A USA Today and #1 international bestselling author, Maddie is a lifelong reader who became a romance junkie as a teen with her first romance novel, The Wolf and the Dove by Kathleen Woodiwiss. From then on, she was hooked, and gobbled up everything she could get her hands on, whether contemporary, historical, paranormal or sci-fi. If there was romance to be found between a strong alpha male, and a sassy, adventurous and ofttimes defiant yet loving woman, Maddie was all over it. As an author, she stays true to those themes writing steamy erotic romance, with a side of kink, and adding elements of intrigue, danger and suspense to her plots.

Maddie started writing as a hobby. Her stories stayed private while she raised a family and worked full time as a registered nurse. It wasn’t until 2012 that she decided to take the plunge and submit her first book for publication: Captain My Captain. She went on to publish eleven novels the first year.

ENJOY THIS STEAMY EXCERPT!!!

“We both said things we regret.”

She blinked up at him. “You did? What, for instance?”

“The part about being splattered on the pavement.”

“That was rather graphic.” A shudder passed through her. “Anything else? What about the spanking part?”

“Hm… I’m not a spanking kind of man. Although, if it happens again, whether tomorrow or the next day, or the one after that, you better believe I’ll put you over my knee.”

“Beck!”

Further protests were smothered by his lips when he swooped in for another kiss. It was just like the first time his lips touched hers–deep, smoldering-hot, and intense. It went on for a while. So long, in fact, that when he pulled away, she was a little swimmy-headed and gasping for air.

“You haven’t learned to breathe through your nose yet,” he observed.

“I guess I need more practice,” she returned, tugging his head as she raised hers, trying to get him to kiss her again.

“What do you regret, Adri?”

She blinked at this sudden shift in focus. “Excuse me?”

“I told you my regret. Now it’s your turn.”

It took her a moment, not to think of an answer, but to find the right words.

“When I said I didn’t need you. That was a lie, Beck. I’ve come to care about you, too.” She strained upward and, with her lips brushing his, whispered urgently, “And not just as a friend.”

His hand moved from her throat to her chest and lower until he claimed a breast. When his thumb swept over the nipple, she arched, seeking more.

“Are you sure about this? Once we go down this road, it changes what we are, and it’s hard to go back.”

“I’m sure. I’m tired of waiting and aching for you.” She shifted her legs further apart, allowing his thigh to fall through and press more firmly against her needy center.

It wasn’t enough for Beck, who caught her behind the knee and pushed it higher, until she could hook her leg around his hip. The rough denim-covered bulge rubbed intimately over her sex—bare beneath her short nightgown—and sent a rush of wetness to her center.

His hand left her breast and moved slowly down her belly. Knowing where he planned to touch next, Adria held her breath as her belly quivered in anticipation. A series of shrill beeps froze them both. When it repeated only seconds later, Beck muttered an oath.

His hand that had been so close to touching her there left her and angled around to his rear pocket. After he slid out his communicator and glanced at the screen, he bit out an even more vehement expletive. “Fuck!”

“Trouble?”

“Yeah.” He dropped his forehead to hers again. “I gotta go.”

“Of course,” she breathed, although it was the last thing in the universe she wanted.
