30 Day Book Challenge

Day #10 – A Wedding

So I have two picks for today – not only because they are at the extremes ends of the spectrum but also because they are pivotal scenes in their respective stories. One book features the wedding at the start, one towards the end.

The first book is Happily Ever Crowned, by Lexi C Foss and Anna Edwards. This is a dark PNR where the wedding is very much NOT a happy and joyous occasion, not for the heroine.

The second book is the final part of the Just An Illusion trilogy, Just An Illusion – EP, by D. Kelly. This is a very happy, though poignant wedding and the words “it’s in the bag” still send shivers down my spine. The book is very much a box of kleenex, bottle of wine and something to cuddle read. It is eviscerating, second only to The Girl and Her Ren in the Ugly Cry Stakes.

Review //\\ Happily Ever Bitten

Happily Ever Bitten (Underworld Royals #2) by Lexi C. Foss and Anna Edwards

The first few chapters felt a little slow, but it soon picked up pace and then it felt like non-stop action until the very end. Zaya and Grigory had me utterly enamoured with them. Zaya with her strength edged with vulnerability and Grigory with his play-boy exterior that hid a man who not only took his responsibilities seriously, but who also cared deeply.

Whilst this can be read stand alone, I do think the enjoyment will be enhanced if you have read Happily Ever Crowned, the previous book in the series. Though I do need to warn that Crowned has some very dark scenes in the beginning, including dubious and non-consent.  Bitten is an exciting, twisty, scorching hot and totally unpredictable paranormal romance. There are lies, plots, secrets and the usual manipulation behind the scenes by Lucifer. I still want to poke his eyes out, but without his cruel plotting Zaya wouldn’t be the woman she is.

I felt this got the balance between plot and romance just right. The amazing story was enhanced by the scorching hot scenes between Zaya and Grigory, not to mention the tender moments that convinced me of the their feelings for one another. I want to say nothing felt unrealistic, which would be silly because this is a book about demons, magic and the underworld. However what I really mean is that the characters felt real, I was there with them, not just reading about them. Their battles became my battles and I became totally wrapped up in their tale.

This is a great book that I highly recommend to those who enjoy a well written paranormal/demons romance. I can’t wait for book 3!

Genre – Paranormal Romance
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/3421992244

A Halfling.
My designation. A plague. An essential death sentence in the Underworld. Until I met him. A Noxia Prince.
He’s arrogant, a playboy, and the male who saved my life. Except he never gave me a choice, his blood tying me to him for an eternity of servitude. And I’m not sure I want to pay that price.
An unspeakable past. Monsters haunt my nightmares. Most of them dead. But a few are still alive, and so I’ll hunt them. Torture them. Slay them all. Even if it brings about an early demise.

A courtship signed in blood. One bite sealed my fate. But someone is playing a dangerous game, and she’ll stop at nothing to see me destroyed.
Life is a journey to death. Sometimes the only way to truly live is to die.
But I’m not going down without a fight.

Release & Review //\\ Zhànshì

Zhànshì by Anna Edwards

Collection: Sinister Fairytales Collection

Release: May 26, 2020

Genre: Dark Fairy Tale Retelling

Whilst I’m not quite convinced that this was quite a 4 star read but it was much closer to that than 3 stars, so 4 it is.

Zhànshì is a well paced, entertaining, has a great heroine, a sexy hero and held my interest throughout. The story is set in modern times, though this is only obvious when modern technology is mentioned. Most of the time it had either an historical or a fantasy feel to it, but that made it more interesting not less.

Whilst this didn’t totally absorb me it did retain my attention and, unlike a couple of other recent reads, I never considered DNF’ing it. I appreciated how skillfully the author wove a tale that really did feel like a darker retelling of the Disney fairytale (as opposed to the original Chinese legend). Lia has always felt like an outsider, uninterested in becoming a warriors wife but rather wanting to be the warrior herself. I liked both her and Jaxon, they both held honour, faith and family in high regard and were prepared to die for their principles.

We all have our own interpretation of dark, so for me it was more that this had dark themes. However it does need a trigger warning as it contains one more detailed scene, and another implied, of sexual assault on the heroine. There are also incidences of physical assault too. However I find my darkness in the psychological effects and emotional impact on main characters but Lia was too strong, too much of a warrior to allow the enemy to break her, so for me it made the dark aspects easier to read. It fitted well with Lia’s strength of character so I had no qualms about her response to Wang’s treatment.

I would have liked just a bit more drama, a touch more angst and not quite such a quick resolution (I won’t say easy because it wasn’t). Not so much plot holes as glossing over the difficult parts. However I still enjoyed this story and read it in one sitting, it’s a decent story.

Blurb:

Lia has known she was different since the age of five when her father taught her the skills of her ancestors. His stories of heroic exploits have fueled her fantasies for years. Little did she know that her expertise would be called upon when two cities, two triads, go to war. Will it be a step too far to think she can hide who she really is?

Jaxon has known his career path since he was a little boy when his father promised his only son to the leader of the Yu Shi triad. Jaxon doesn’t mind—it allows him to center his chaotic thoughts and fight his opponents to the death. But when he’s partnered with a mysterious new recruit, he begins to question everything he knows. What is the young boy hiding from him?

Zhanzhi is a modern day retelling of the tale of Mulan for the Sinister Fairytales Collection. Warrior Lia must find her inner strength to defeat a deadly enemy, who’s been left bitter by his quest for absolute power, while at the same time falling in love when she least expects it. Nothing will be as it seems in this dark triad world where a moment’s hesitation can be your downfall.

BOOKISH FRIDAY

I’m joining in with Bookish Friday this week, a meme created and hosted by LauReads and Niffler Reads. This weeks prompt, spookily enough, is First Lines, which is what I’ve been sharing for the last few Fridays! I’m going to feature 6 first lines this week, which may seem a strange number choice but they are all from an amazing anthology that released yesterday. It’s dark, it’s twisted and it is definitely unpredictable. I’m talking about The Institute by Dani Rene, Anna Edwards, Murphy Wallace, India R Adams, Jennifer Bene and Sian B Claven.

1 Echo by Dani Rene

It was ten years ago when my life took a turn for the worst.
It was also in those dark times that I realized I wasn’t going to be the same after what had happened. Instead of running from the darkness, I embraced it.

2. Marbh by Anna Edwards

“Marbh, we have a few new people today. Why don’t you tell them a bit about yourself?”
I don’t acknowledge the doctor talking to me. Why should I – he’s keeping me prisoner here. This is his fault. The mid-forties man with graying temples stares at me, urging me to respond. I’m not going to give him the satisifaction.

3 Hostile Illusions by India R Adams

Cruelty and all its power
Why am I the game of each hour?
Every pain, every slice…
It was not only me in this deadly vise

As I lie here, life draining from my body, there is a clarity present that is bringing me cherished peace. I smile in relief, knowing that there is truly an Evermore…

4 Mr Cat is Not Real by Jennifer Bene

The walls are breathing again, but at least they’re not whispering this time.
Yet.
Dr. Nickelsen says it’s not real, that I just have to focus on something that still feels normal and push the bad thoughts away, but it’s not easy when I can hear every inahle and exhale like the volume’s been cranked up to 11.

5 Release Me by Murphy Wallace

Shit! Fuck! One moment I was getting fucked senseless by the guy that I met at the bar tonight. The next, I am on top of his lifeless body, loosening my grip on the rope around his neck. There is a broken bong laying in pieces by his head, and he is bleeding. Not again.

6 Sanitorium by Sian B Claven

The world is so bright after you’ve been enveloped in the darkness of sleep for so many hours. Molly had never been a morning person; the light streaming through the windows was not magical and awakening to her. Being pulled form the deep slumber that her medication granted her was anything but pleasant and yet, the sun streamed through the window, tugging at her eyelids to flicker open and squint at the bright world around.
Bright, but bland.

Release & Review //\\ The Institute

The Institute

by Dani René, Anna Edwards, Murphy Wallace, India R. Adams, Cassandra Faye, Sian Claven

Release: April 30, 2020

Genre: Dark Romance

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/49350158-the-institute

Having read all the stories in the anthology, there is definitely something in here for every one who enjoys an erotic twisted story.

1. Echo by Dani Rene
I really enjoyed the idea of two completely different personalities in one body and whilst this is they type of anthology where I’m not expecting any sort of traditional HEA, the ending seemed a little bit pointless. It’s hard to explain without spoiling the story but I couldn’t understand what had led Dr Ansel to suddenly change his mind/behaviour. Where did that sudden volt face come from? I liked the story but it was just a little too disjointed/underdeveloped for me to totally love it.

2. Marbh by Anna Edwards
I really liked this, particularly in it having an antiheroine as the main focus. Again this is vague because it’s a fairly short story and – spoilers! – but I loved the reveal and thought the ending was not only brave but actually perfect. The story totally drew me in, had me fascinated and Marbh is an amazing character.

3. Hostile Illusion by India R Adams

description

A wonderfully tragic, dark, depraved, inspiring, heartwarming, heartbreaking story. Words, words have left me. This story alone makes the book worth buying. I really can’t say too much but it’s got such a wonderfully dark but happy ending. Beautiful, tragic, amazing.

4. Mr Cat Is Not Real by Cassandra Faye (Jennifer Bene)
Oh my word, Nina made me cry! Her desperation to be good, to go outside, to have a friend, for Tom to like her, maybe to get well enough to go home. I’m not quite sure how I feel about Dr Nickelsen and Tom. Are they truly trying to help or just taking advantage. This is such a dark, very dub-con story. In fact given Nina’s mental state it’s non-con, even if she does agree and enjoy it.
JB dragged me through a whole range of emotions with this short story, and left me sort of heart hurt and sort of hopeful. I need to give Nina a hug.

5. Release Me by Murphy Wallace
As I was reading this I wondered how the author was going to wrap things up, because it read and progressed like a full length book. Then I got to the part that said ‘end of part one’ and realised that this probably will eventually become a full length story.
However don’t be put off because the story of Dr Richard and B contained in this book is a twisted, difficult, thought provoking, well paced and very erotic read. It totally captivated me and I definitely will read the rest of the story when it’s released. I would describe it as ending at a natural break point rather than a cliff-hanger ending.

6. Sanitorim by Sian B. Claven
This is a totally new-to-me author and I have to say I was very impressed with the story of Mollie, Lizzie and James. I sort of guessed a few of the twists because of the foreshadowing but that didn’t take away from the enjoyment in anyway. Especially since there were plenty of other twists and surprises along the way.
I’m still wondering about Riley and Jana, that’s possibly the only plot hole but nothing too big and irrelevant anyway given the ending. Which I LOVED!

Favourite Reads of 2019 – Part Two

So yesterday I revealed the more ‘real life’ favourite books of 2019, even if that real life was firmly fictional. Today I’m showcasing my favourite books from those worlds that definitely could only exist inside a writers ingenious mind. The sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal and omegaverse worlds where the ‘normal’ rules don’t apply and pretty much anything goes. They all still fall into the romance genre, because I love me some smut, but I still see them as different and distinct categories.

Sci-Fi Romance

1. Delirium by Myra Danvers.
Iris is hands down my favourite heroine of all times. I may want to marry her, I definitely want to have her children. Sadly Myra Danvers has also struggled with writing, and life, of late, so we are still awaiting the next book in the series. However I remember the days of only knowing my favourite author had released the next book in a series when I found it in the local book shop. I’m happy to wait, and should there never be any more Iris I would still recommend this book because it is simply that good.

Read my review.

2. Deliverance and Her Dark Legion by Pippa DaCosta.
OK, so I’m cheating a lot little here, but I love both of these books for hugely different reasons and can’t even fit a cigarette paper between to separate the pair of them. Deliverance is a much awaited instalment of the 1000 Revolutions series. I totally love Caleb and One and was sooooo happy to catch up with them a little more. I wouldn’t like to say if you could read this stand alone, since I have read the rest of the books, but it was a complete segment of a story, so it’s a possibility.
Her Dark Legion was the final book in the Messenger Chronicles and you definitely need to have read the previous 4 books. This is high on my list of All Time Favourite Series’ Ever, possibly only pipped by the series written under the authors other pen name, Ariana Nash.
Her writing is phenomenal and both books are brim full of feels, have amazing characters and outstanding world building.

My reviews are here and here.

3. Virgin Tribute by Delta James.

Set in a dystopian future this is a dark tale that contains dubious consent and non-consensual power exchanges. It left me speechless and hungering for more, much more, of this world. Especially since Drake had a barbed phallus…. oh the possibilities!
This is another book that could have easily fitted into the Dark catagory, but since I was already having trouble slimming that one down the decision to place it here was an easy one to make.

My review.

Paranormal Romance

1. Happily Ever Crowned by Lexi C Foss and Anna Edwards.

“Wow. Dark, powerful, gut-wrenching, twisted, steamy and amazing. “
Lexi C Foss has the golden touch as far as I am concerned. I can’t believe I only discovered her work this year but am massively grateful that I did. Her writing holds my attention from the first line to the last, and fills me so full of feels like you wouldn’t believe.
It is subtitled as book 1 of a series and I for one can’t wait to join in with more adventures.

Review.

2. Mesmer (and the Dark Hearts Series) by Cari Silverwood.

Whilst Mesmer is a stand alone read, to fully understand and appreciate the story I would recommend having read the super dark, super amazing Dark Hearts series first. It contains a lot of world building that enhances the story in this book.
Mesmers are a group of men who can mind control susceptible women, turning them into sex (or I guess any other kind of) slave. Sadly the mesmer gene, or the power it conveys, causes most of these men to travel down the wrong path. It’s a pretty dark read (co-written by Jennifer Bene what else can you expect?), with lots of boundary pushing kink to boot.
Cari has a unique writing voice, it actually takes on its own character, Greta, in this book and is what makes her my favourite current author.

Review of Mesmer.

3. Sin & Magic by KF Breene.

Actually I should be listing this under it’s series title of Demigod of San Francisco, since the books need to be read in chronological order. Written by the the amazingly talented KF Breene, this is only one of dozens of her must read books. The word awesome was invented to describe this lady and I recommend ALL her work to you.

My review for particular book is here.

Fantasy Romance

1. Silk & Steel Series by Ariana Nash.

Ariana Nash is the brand new MM, steamier version of the author Pippa DaCosta. In the Silk & Steel series she has created a world of dragon shifters, elves and humans. It’s a dark read, very dark and all trigger warnings should be seriously heeded. The romance between natural enemies Lysander (a dragon shifter prince) and Eroan (an elf charged with destroying dragons) develops slowly over the course of the trilogy. And with all great stories the course of true love never does run smooth.
Some reviews talk about plot holes and inconsistent details, however if those reviewers had read books 1-3, they would have found that those questions were answered at some point.

My reviews
Sealed with a Kiss (Book 0.5)
Silk & Steel (Book 1)
Iron & Fire (Book 2)
Blood & Ice (Book 3)
Lost & Found (Book 3.5)
The Black Prince (Book 4)

2. Last Titan Series by Myra Danvers.

An absolutely amazing new author sprang onto the scene this year, though she’s been on literotica for quite a while. I’ve already featured her sci-fi romance, Delirium, but such is my admiration for this author, and her work, that I’m also featuring her fantasy romance series.
Ravenous Innocence, Insatiable Corruption and Lavish Destruction are the first three books of the series. I’m still not Asher’s biggest fan, but I’m slowly being persuaded by Ms Danvers that he deserves his chance with Mila, even if he has taken her power and bound her to him. The balance of power however was slowly shifting to her direction and I am eagerly awaiting more books in the series. Particularly since the writing is so amazing.

Ravenous Innocence, Insatiable Corruption and Lavish Destruction.

3. Condemned by Cari Silverwood.

I do believe that I’ve already mentioned this author is my favourite. Her writing just speaks to me on a level that many others don’t. She’s like a super kinky version of Terry Pratchett, always pushing boundaries but usually making me giggle along the way.
Condemned was one of two books written she published via Stormy Nights, which meant a toning down of the darker elements she usually includes. It’s a RH kink-fest and one of the few stand alone books where the males have distinct characteristics and there is also a well developed plot. Not only did she includes the prerequisite cute and quirky bot in this story (a mouse), but her heroine is half Mauleon, a genetically-engineered leonine type species. And that right there is a huge pointer to Ms Silverwoods off-beat humour right there – the cat relying on and caring for the mouse. Oh and did I mention there are winged horses that “hop-fly”?

Review for Condemned

The final category is Omegaverse, which as been hugely popular within the MM realm, but has seen a huge growth in both the MF and dark romance tropes.

Omegaverse Romance

1. Broken by Eva Dresden.

I think this is one of the best debut novels I have ever read. It’s very dark and is part of the as yet unfinished Omega’s Destruction series. Ms Dresden really does put her heroine, Quinn, through the wringer. I’m surprised she can still function after all that she has endured!
Eva’s writing has a somewhat poetic feel to it, things are often suggested or implied rather than always being blatantly and very obviously told/shown. It provides a breath of fresh air and makes this very much a must-read series. The book does end on a cliff-hanger and whilst book 2 is available (and a highly recommended read too), the final book of the series is currently still in production.

2. December (Sacred Omegas #1) by Merel Pierce.

Blending Omegaverse with a slightly dystopian feeling organised crime/mafia romance gave this book a VERY unique feel. It took me by surprise with how dark it got, things were trotting along quite nicely and then BAM! it veered straight into darksville. This book is certainly not all sweetness and light, although the acts are not perpetrated by the hero. He is a more than a bit of an alpha-hole at first, but he does treat her with respect and I found myself caring deeply for both December and Nikolai.

3. Primal Possession by Tabitha Black.

This is the very last book I’m highlighting from 2019 but it is by no means in last place in any other respect. I started of hating the hero of this book, but by the end was totally besotted by him. The author wrote a very convincing story that definitely had it’s own feel and carved it’s own spot within the omegaverse world.
It’s the first book in an interconnected series of stand alones and I’m looking forward to Ms Black releasing more of them.

Underworld Royals #1

Happily Ever Crowned (Underworld Royals #1)
by Lexi C. Foss and Anna Edwards

5 STARS 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Wow. Dark, powerful, gut-wrenching, twisted, steamy and amazing.

This book takes you to the depths of hell literally as well as figuratively, and whilst not the very blackest of black it certainly had its moments. Whilst a lot of the darkness is implied or referred to in retrospect there are still plenty of edgy dub-con and non-con moments. In fact we get a very graphic and disturbing scene fairly close to the start and totally necessary to set the tone of the story.

I absolutely adored both Valora and Adrik, they had depth and, despite being paranormal creatures, felt both real and believable. Valora could so easily have felt weak but somehow this talented pair of authors kept her head above water and gave us a woman with huge depths of compassion and an inner strength that even she never suspected at. There was some pretty decent world building too, perhaps not the most complex I’ve read but more than sufficient to allow the story to hold its own.

Adrik had every intention of being a bad man but just had far too kind a heart. He was a wonderful hero and, for me, the story worked better that way as opposed to Valora having a magical vajayjay that miraculously alters his personality! It was great to see both characters grew and mature during this story, and in a way that felt entirely natural. Their connection and relationship was also well portrayed, and again was totally believable.

The story had an excellent mix of passion, evil and intrigue with some twists at the end that will leave your head spinning – even though the authors dropped a few little breadcrumb clues at the start! I loved that there wasn’t instant forgiveness of certain people for their actions but that Valora didn’t rule it out either.

And that little epilogue has me panting for the next book!

“I do.”
Two words that signed over my soul to a monster, all to save a kingdom I knew little about. This isn’t a fairy tale. No knights in shining armor, only kings fighting for power. And my heart is the key.

A game designed to shatter even the harshest of resolves.
My husband wants to debase me. To break me. To destroy my spirit. To possess every inch of my soul through acts so heinous, I can hardly breathe. And he’s using six men to do it. Including him. Adrik, Prince of Noxia.

Desire.
Such a wicked twist of fate. Happily-Ever-After may not exist here, but amorous energy rises after a night of unbridled passion. A night I should hate, but don’t.. A night I long to repeat.

“I love you.”
A statement I will never say. Not even to him–my dark prince who plays in the shadows, engaging me in a forbidden dance of hope and adoration. He promises me a new crown, in exchange for my heart.

Vengeance
I will not be owned.
I will rise above them all.
And the only crown I will wear is the one drenched in their blood.

Author’s Note: This is a dark paranormal romance. Please read the author’s note at the beginning (available in the “look inside” feature) if you have any concerns about dark content.

“No permanent damage,” Necros finally said. “She might be barren, but I want her alive.”

Of course you do, I thought. He wanted her power, same as I did. “So only leave wounds that will heal under immortality?” Again the question was for the benefit of our audience. It would be such a shame to harm someone so gorgeous.

Necros nodded. “Blood is fine. You can even break bone. But only if she can recover without a scar. If I can’t breed her, I might as well use her body for other means.”

Another benefit of having her trained, I supposed.

Not that I agreed with any of this.

But I had to play along to get what I needed–her heart.

“Understood,” I murmured, tracing the tip of my dagger down her corseted top. Her breathing remained steady as she floated in some faraway place, her imagination overtaking her reality. Alas, I couldn’t allow her to stay there. I needed her focus and compliance to achieve my goal. “I want to teach you something, Valora,” I said, my weapon nearing her belly button. “An important lesson on participation.”
