Favourite Reads of 2019 – Part Two

So yesterday I revealed the more ‘real life’ favourite books of 2019, even if that real life was firmly fictional. Today I’m showcasing my favourite books from those worlds that definitely could only exist inside a writers ingenious mind. The sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal and omegaverse worlds where the ‘normal’ rules don’t apply and pretty much anything goes. They all still fall into the romance genre, because I love me some smut, but I still see them as different and distinct categories.

Sci-Fi Romance

1. Delirium by Myra Danvers.
Iris is hands down my favourite heroine of all times. I may want to marry her, I definitely want to have her children. Sadly Myra Danvers has also struggled with writing, and life, of late, so we are still awaiting the next book in the series. However I remember the days of only knowing my favourite author had released the next book in a series when I found it in the local book shop. I’m happy to wait, and should there never be any more Iris I would still recommend this book because it is simply that good.

Read my review.

2. Deliverance and Her Dark Legion by Pippa DaCosta.
OK, so I’m cheating a lot little here, but I love both of these books for hugely different reasons and can’t even fit a cigarette paper between to separate the pair of them. Deliverance is a much awaited instalment of the 1000 Revolutions series. I totally love Caleb and One and was sooooo happy to catch up with them a little more. I wouldn’t like to say if you could read this stand alone, since I have read the rest of the books, but it was a complete segment of a story, so it’s a possibility.
Her Dark Legion was the final book in the Messenger Chronicles and you definitely need to have read the previous 4 books. This is high on my list of All Time Favourite Series’ Ever, possibly only pipped by the series written under the authors other pen name, Ariana Nash.
Her writing is phenomenal and both books are brim full of feels, have amazing characters and outstanding world building.

My reviews are here and here.

3. Virgin Tribute by Delta James.

Set in a dystopian future this is a dark tale that contains dubious consent and non-consensual power exchanges. It left me speechless and hungering for more, much more, of this world. Especially since Drake had a barbed phallus…. oh the possibilities!
This is another book that could have easily fitted into the Dark catagory, but since I was already having trouble slimming that one down the decision to place it here was an easy one to make.

My review.

Paranormal Romance

1. Happily Ever Crowned by Lexi C Foss and Anna Edwards.

“Wow. Dark, powerful, gut-wrenching, twisted, steamy and amazing. “
Lexi C Foss has the golden touch as far as I am concerned. I can’t believe I only discovered her work this year but am massively grateful that I did. Her writing holds my attention from the first line to the last, and fills me so full of feels like you wouldn’t believe.
It is subtitled as book 1 of a series and I for one can’t wait to join in with more adventures.

2. Mesmer (and the Dark Hearts Series) by Cari Silverwood.

Whilst Mesmer is a stand alone read, to fully understand and appreciate the story I would recommend having read the super dark, super amazing Dark Hearts series first. It contains a lot of world building that enhances the story in this book.
Mesmers are a group of men who can mind control susceptible women, turning them into sex (or I guess any other kind of) slave. Sadly the mesmer gene, or the power it conveys, causes most of these men to travel down the wrong path. It’s a pretty dark read (co-written by Jennifer Bene what else can you expect?), with lots of boundary pushing kink to boot.
Cari has a unique writing voice, it actually takes on its own character, Greta, in this book and is what makes her my favourite current author.

Review of Mesmer.

3. Sin & Magic by KF Breene.

Actually I should be listing this under it’s series title of Demigod of San Francisco, since the books need to be read in chronological order. Written by the the amazingly talented KF Breene, this is only one of dozens of her must read books. The word awesome was invented to describe this lady and I recommend ALL her work to you.

My review for particular book is here.

Fantasy Romance

1. Silk & Steel Series by Ariana Nash.

Ariana Nash is the brand new MM, steamier version of the author Pippa DaCosta. In the Silk & Steel series she has created a world of dragon shifters, elves and humans. It’s a dark read, very dark and all trigger warnings should be seriously heeded. The romance between natural enemies Lysander (a dragon shifter prince) and Eroan (an elf charged with destroying dragons) develops slowly over the course of the trilogy. And with all great stories the course of true love never does run smooth.
Some reviews talk about plot holes and inconsistent details, however if those reviewers had read books 1-3, they would have found that those questions were answered at some point.

My reviews
Sealed with a Kiss (Book 0.5)
Silk & Steel (Book 1)
Iron & Fire (Book 2)
Blood & Ice (Book 3)
Lost & Found (Book 3.5)
The Black Prince (Book 4)

2. Last Titan Series by Myra Danvers.

An absolutely amazing new author sprang onto the scene this year, though she’s been on literotica for quite a while. I’ve already featured her sci-fi romance, Delirium, but such is my admiration for this author, and her work, that I’m also featuring her fantasy romance series.
Ravenous Innocence, Insatiable Corruption and Lavish Destruction are the first three books of the series. I’m still not Asher’s biggest fan, but I’m slowly being persuaded by Ms Danvers that he deserves his chance with Mila, even if he has taken her power and bound her to him. The balance of power however was slowly shifting to her direction and I am eagerly awaiting more books in the series. Particularly since the writing is so amazing.

Ravenous Innocence, Insatiable Corruption and Lavish Destruction.

3. Condemned by Cari Silverwood.

I do believe that I’ve already mentioned this author is my favourite. Her writing just speaks to me on a level that many others don’t. She’s like a super kinky version of Terry Pratchett, always pushing boundaries but usually making me giggle along the way.
Condemned was one of two books written she published via Stormy Nights, which meant a toning down of the darker elements she usually includes. It’s a RH kink-fest and one of the few stand alone books where the males have distinct characteristics and there is also a well developed plot. Not only did she includes the prerequisite cute and quirky bot in this story (a mouse), but her heroine is half Mauleon, a genetically-engineered leonine type species. And that right there is a huge pointer to Ms Silverwoods off-beat humour right there – the cat relying on and caring for the mouse. Oh and did I mention there are winged horses that “hop-fly”?

Review for Condemned

The final category is Omegaverse, which as been hugely popular within the MM realm, but has seen a huge growth in both the MF and dark romance tropes.

Omegaverse Romance

1. Broken by Eva Dresden.

I think this is one of the best debut novels I have ever read. It’s very dark and is part of the as yet unfinished Omega’s Destruction series. Ms Dresden really does put her heroine, Quinn, through the wringer. I’m surprised she can still function after all that she has endured!
Eva’s writing has a somewhat poetic feel to it, things are often suggested or implied rather than always being blatantly and very obviously told/shown. It provides a breath of fresh air and makes this very much a must-read series. The book does end on a cliff-hanger and whilst book 2 is available (and a highly recommended read too), the final book of the series is currently still in production.

2. December (Sacred Omegas #1) by Merel Pierce.

Blending Omegaverse with a slightly dystopian feeling organised crime/mafia romance gave this book a VERY unique feel. It took me by surprise with how dark it got, things were trotting along quite nicely and then BAM! it veered straight into darksville. This book is certainly not all sweetness and light, although the acts are not perpetrated by the hero. He is a more than a bit of an alpha-hole at first, but he does treat her with respect and I found myself caring deeply for both December and Nikolai.

3. Primal Possession by Tabitha Black.

This is the very last book I’m highlighting from 2019 but it is by no means in last place in any other respect. I started of hating the hero of this book, but by the end was totally besotted by him. The author wrote a very convincing story that definitely had it’s own feel and carved it’s own spot within the omegaverse world.
It’s the first book in an interconnected series of stand alones and I’m looking forward to Ms Black releasing more of them.

Wolflord: A Dark Shifter Romance
by Delta James

This is the third book in an interconnected series, though each can be read as a stand alone. However to fully appreciate both the back story AND to avoid spoilers I would personally suggest reading Warlord first and then Overlord.

Rauri and Arielle are a passionate couple and this book has plenty of scorching hot moments. Whilst there are some dubious consent sexual acts, Rauri isn’t one to ask his mate if she’s in the mood, Arielle certainly enjoys his attentions and responds with enthusiasm. They have a fiery relationship, Arielle is not the meek, quiet girl everyone presumed her to be. Especially not since she never seems to be given a choice in her life.

The series is set in a patriarchal society, where the alpha wolf’s word is law and where females are subject to spankings/strappings if they disobey their man. Whilst I would never support this lack of autonomy in real life, I love the Dom/sub dynamic in these books and the battle of wills and wiles that ensues. The author, through character dialogue, does acknowledge that the system is unfair, that males do not seem to be held to the same account as females. However that is the core of the book, the power exchange, the domination and submission, the disciplinary spankings and the resulting re-connection and hot bedroom scenes.

Wolflord is a very enjoyable, steamy and well written story. It easily held my attention and drew me in with Rauri and Arielle’s love story. I’m looking forward to meeting the mysterious man who we briefly saw in this book, I’m wondering if his fated mate is a certain widow and mother of a young girl.

She fought him. He claimed her anyway.

Ruari of Clan Dundalk knew Arielle was his mate as soon as he set eyes on her, but he had planned to court her properly. When she arrives in his lands as an uninvited stowaway, however, he decides it is time for this beautiful, headstrong female to be taught her place over his knee.

As she is led to her new mate’s castle naked, blushing, and sore, with only a sheet to hide her helpless arousal, Arielle’s fury at being bared and spanked is exceeded only by her desperate need to be thrown to the ground and ravaged by the brute who just punished her so shamefully.

She won’t have to wait long…

Publisher’s Note: Wolflord is a stand-alone novel set in the same world as Warlord and Overlord. It includes spankings and sexual scenes. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

Dark Paranormal Romance

Earlier this year I came across a series of books by a new-to-me author. They were a scorching hot mix of shifter/paranormal and spanking/domestic discipline romance. The heroines in Delta James’ Wayward Mates series are all strong, determined women who know their own minds, enjoy their mates dominance and endure the spankings they get because they know the sex that follows is mind blowing. Plus they love their fated mates.

In the last few books of the series we discover the heroines are no where near as well behaved as their mates believe them to be. Not happy to sit safely in the background whilst the men deal with turbulence in their patriarchal society, the women have been planning and plotting their own moves behind the scenes.

The series reached a natural end but both the readers and author weren’t quite ready to say goodbye to this world yet. So what emerged was a new series, set in a dystopian future where technology has disappeared and life is lived more like it was in medieval times. The first book was Warlord, which I’ve reviewed on here previously. The next book, Overlord is the focus of this post. The really great news is that future books are also in the pipeline.

OVERLORD by Delta James

Please be aware this is a DARK romance, which means it contains some elements of dubious/non-consent

Overlord is the follow up to Warlord, it can be read stand alone but I would suggest reading the books in order to gain maximum enjoyment. Sloan and Gareth’s story isn’t always easy – as the blurb states “Today Gareth of Ravenscar decided she was his, and she wasn’t given a choice in the matter.”  However it is full of passion, which is bound to happen when two very strong and determined characters lock horns. I thoroughly enjoyed their story and couldn’t read it fast enough.

There were moments when I didn’t even like Gareth, but then the author cleverly wove his emotions into the story, often via his fated mate link with Sloan, totally changing my mind. Yes he could be considered dictatorial, but when we really listen via his thoughts, words and actions he truly loves, honours and respects Sloan. The author really persuaded me of his affection for and deep regard of his mate, turning him from a possible arrogant alpha-hole into a dominant alpha male.

Whilst Sloan and Gareth’s story is complete, at least for now, trouble is brewing and I’m fairly certain there will be a few more books before peace is truly restored in this dystopian/shifter world.

She was not asked. She was claimed.

Sloan has lived among shifters long enough to know what happens when an alpha takes a mate, but she never imagined that her turn would come to be marked and mastered. Until today…

Today Gareth of Ravenscar decided she was his, and she wasn’t given a choice in the matter.

Now, with her cheeks blushing, her bottom burning, and the evidence of his rough conquest still dripping down her bare thighs, she is beginning to understand what it truly means to be claimed.

Publisher’s Note:Overlord is a stand-alone novel set in the same world as Warlord. It includes spankings and sexual scenes. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

WARLORD: A Dark Shifter Romance by Delta James

Warlord is a darker read, with non-consensual punishments, so reader caution is advised. It is set in a dystopian future, the same one as Virgin Tribute but this is set in the UK and focuses on wolf shifters. There are also links to the Wayward Mates series, though you absolutely don’t need to have read any other books to enjoy this one.

I really enjoyed this book, since the setting is dystopian/paranormal I can let go of societal norms and accept the patriarchal structure of the society. My modern brain doesn’t always agree with it but since the fiction isn’t mimicking ‘real life’ it is something I can live with.

I adored Rowan, she is a feisty no nonsense heroine, raised to be a warrior and unwilling to bow to any man. Alaric is all alpha and determined to master his naughty mate. He is prepared to deliver non-consensual spankings and beltings when he feels she has misbehaved, and doesn’t mind displaying Rowan’s punished behind to his men. Conversely he also holds her in high esteem and takes great care to otherwise ensure her comfort and happiness.

Two such strong and powerful alphas are bound to clash, and their passion is scorching hot. I’m not really sure how Delta James managed it but she took me from wanting Rowan to kick Alaric’s butt, to being pleased with the relationship that unfolded.

The story flows smoothly, the plot and pace combining perfectly to hold my attention throughout. By the end, I not only liked but also respected both main characters. I’m also hoping that we might get both Sloan and Arielle’s stories sometime in the future. If you enjoyed either the Wayward Mates series, Virgin Tribute, or like darker edged domestic discipline books, then I am only to happy to recommend this book to you.

He conquered her. Now he will claim her.

When Rowan inherited control of her pack upon her father’s death, she vowed never to marry, and many a suitor has since been sent home disappointed. But Alaric of Ravenscar is no suitor…

He is a warlord, never defeated in battle, and he has come to take what he wants. He means to conquer not just Rowan’s lands, but her beautiful virgin body as well, and her efforts to defy him merely result in her being mounted and claimed with her well-spanked bare bottom still burning.

Soon Alaric will mark her as his mate, but first she will be thoroughly and shamefully mastered.

BEAR by Delta James

A Dark Shifter Romance

I very much enjoyed the unusual twist on the usual bear shifter type of story. It definitely added extra depth to the story, along with the excellent suspense elements. Overall the pace drove the story along well, resulting in a very satisfying read. I really loved the feeling of destiny and fate that ran throughout the book.

I did struggle to connect with the ‘romance’ for a little while, though I very much liked both main characters. For me personally I would have preferred a little more focus on building and developing their relationship and less on spanking/discipline/sex in the first half of the book. However that is a very personal preference and one could just as easily argue that the domestic discipline aspect IS a huge part of their relationship. Just as it began to feel a little repetitive, the pace picked up, the story took off and my attention was held until the very end of the book.

As always Delta James wrote a wonderfully strong female in Halley and a sexy, dominant hero in Cade. By the end of the story I was very much convinced of not only their connection but also their love. Charlie and Kaye were two very good supporting characters and I also felt as though I got to know Halley’s grandmother too. The author is very good at writing characters you would love to meet and this book was no exception.

This is a domestic discipline book which contains spankings that the heroine may not like but ultimately agrees with. As this is a dark romance it does take her longer to be content with the status quo and some of the discipline is dubious consent in nature, though all sexual activity is fully consented to. The publisher does provide a warning, these should always be taken note of if you don’t enjoy seeing the heroine spanked and disciplined (some of which can seem quite severe, depending on personal likes/dislikes).

For centuries he roamed the mountains, restless and wild. Then he chose me as his mate.

He was a man once, long ago. Now people say he is nothing more than a myth, a legend, a story locals tell one another around the campfire. The tale of the mountain man who became a bear.

But I know better. He saved my life, and he watches over me still. Because I belong to him.

The man in him is old-fashioned, from a time when a headstrong woman was taken over a knee, but the beast in him is as wild as this land itself, and when he claims me it will be truly savage.

Publisher’s Note: Bear includes spankings and rough, intense sexual scenes. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

5 STARS – ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Well this was…. wow….and….that to…..and….hell yes….and really?….and…. whoa……and….yum…..and….and….yeah all of that.

OMG Ms Delta James, I loved, loved, loved your Fated Mates series but Virgin Tribute? It blew them all right out of the water.

Feisty heroine? Tick
Beastly antihero? Tick
Fantastic world building? Tick
Virgin concubine given as payment for continuing protection? Tick
Lots and lots of claiming, mating and rutting? Tick
A barbed phallus? Tick

Wait! What? Hold on just a moment! A barbed dick? Yep, you heard me folks, a spiky member that promises untold pleasure along with that edge of pain that just enhances everything. And boy did Drake know how to use it to good effect, I may be just a little jealous of Reagan!

If i had any criticism of the book, it would be that some of the sex scenes were a little repetitive in feel. It wasn’t a big thing and it didn’t spoil my enjoyment in any way, I just wanted a little variety or just something ‘more’. However what we did get was still one very hot hot HOT read that I only put down because I was falling asleep whilst reading in the early hours and not really following the plot anymore.

I FLOVED the dynamic between Reagan and Drake, whilst there was a power exchange, with Drake firmly in charge, he still listened to and appreciated Reagan. What started as a non-consensual arrangement believably morphed into a genuine partnership.

Reagan had me from the start when she refused to be brainwashed by or kowtow to the Elders of the Sanctuary. She chose her battles well, never giving in, never giving up and never TSTL (too stupid to live). Drake was at heart, a good man doing bad things but from the best of intentions. He is deliciously dominant but not arrogantly alpha and I absolutely adored both him and Reagan.

The epilogue was absolutely perfect and, damn you Ms James, those very last lines reduced me to tears. THEY. WERE. PERFECT.

If you love the work of Renee Rose, Lee Savino, Sara Fields, Sue Lyndon, Loki Renard or enjoyed Ruled by Cari Silverwood, then this book is perfect for you. If you like an edgy steamy sci-fi read it’s for you.

The book contains scenes of power exchange and domestic discipline. This is NOT a real world setting, so SSC and RACK do not exist here. Please don’t read this just to moan about Drake ‘beating’ and ‘abusing’ Reagan. Even Reagan herself acknowledges that he punishes her poor behaviour and isn’t beating her! Don’t let a fictional character have more sense than a real person.

The beast protects us, but he demands tribute.

I was not asked. I was chosen. Every year, the creature who keeps our community safe requires a virgin as tribute, and every year she is thoroughly ravaged and then returned ruined for any other man. No one will tell me exactly what is in store for me, I only know he’s not going to be gentle.

But the elders underestimated me, and when they left me in the sacred clearing I took the chance to escape. Now the beast hunts me, and if he finds me I can only wonder what he’ll do to me…

Publisher’s Note:Virgin Tribute includes spankings and rough, intense sexual scenes. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

Hunted and Claimed: Delta James

For all the Wayward fans who may have thought the Alpha guys have it easy, meet Riley Gentry a.k.a. The Masked Marauder.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

I FLOVED this book, IMHO it’s the best one yet. In fact I was that drawn into the story I read it in one day. This features Riley and Cameron, we’ve not really met either character before, though both have been hinted at/been in the background.

I either want to BE Riley or marry her (even though I’m straight and been married for 24 years). God that woman is kick-ass. Cameron was pretty decent too, though he paled in comparison to her absolute amazingness. My word she led him a merry dance with her determination to see justice served. I felt that he showed a great deal of respect for Riley, even though he too wanted to protect her a little too much at times.

In earlier books I’d got the impression that many of these super strong females had been spanked into submission by their alpha’s and were pretty much toe-ing the line. The last book threw a few doubts around that, this totally blows it out the water. There is a much stronger feel of discontent amongst the women, not particularly regarding their male so much as the patriarchal nature of their society as a whole. There was mention of an underground network that helped females escape less enlightened mates, and we discover that those Bae Diogel girls haven’t been quite as well behaved and meek as it might first appear.

Now if you don’t like alpha males who decide when their mate has been naughty, and spank/welt her ass soundly when she is, then you probably won’t like this. SO STEP AWAY, OR AT THE VERY LEAST PROCEED WITH CAUTION. I’d hate to see negative reviews on a book that clearly states that it has spanking and that in this parallel universe shifter males are in charge.

Another thing I will throw out there is that this finishes with a part of the story line left ‘hanging’. I wouldn’t call this a cliff-hanger and we do see Cameron and Riley’s story reach a HFN point BUT the ending almost isn’t an ending. HOWEVER that isn’t a criticism as I can see quite clearly that it’s a lead up to the next book. Part of me feels like Riley should continue to be the heroine, however so far each book has featured a separate couple, so I’m not making any assumptions. I do think she and some of the Bae Diogel girls will be playing a significant role in that book though.

I have a sneaking suspicion this may be the penultimate book, though I really REALLY hope it isn’t because I quite simply haven’t had enough of this world yet. However they do say to always go out on a high, and with how the series has been shaping up so far I do have high hopes for the next book.

Whilst this has an ongoing background story, and characters from previous books, I firmly believe you CAN read it as a stand-alone. It contains a few very mild spoilers for previous books (not many though) and seems to explain things I already knew in a way that didn’t feel tedious or repetitive, but would allow someone new to the series to pick up on what they’ve missed.

If you love shifter romances or domestic discipline stories then I highly recommend this book. I can’t wait for the next one.

She thought she could run from her mate. Then he lassoed her.

Riley decided years ago that she would be better off on her own, but when the alpha of the local pack finds out there’s a lone wolf causing trouble on his turf he takes matters into his own hands.

As far as Cameron Nichols is concerned, Riley will be joining his pack whether she likes it or not. Her only choice will be whether to submit to his authority with or without needing to be stripped bare and spanked over his knee until she is kicking and crying and promising obedience. When she chooses the latter, the Navy SEAL turned cowboy is more than happy to oblige.

But Cameron knows instantly that Riley isn’t just a feisty female in need of an alpha’s firm hand. She is his mate, and she knows it too, despite her best efforts to deny it. No matter how many times she tries to run, he will always chase her down, punish her thoroughly, and then mount and claim her so roughly that all she can do is scream her helpless, shamefully intense pleasure into the pillow as her body betrays her and surrenders ever more completely to his demands.

Author Synopsis:

For all the Wayward fans who may have thought the Alpha guys have it easy, meet Riley Gentry a.k.a. The Masked Marauder.

Riley, lone wolf, alpha herself, has dedicated her life to rescuing as many women as possible from the rogue packs who have kidnapped them to use for breeding.   Using the cover of working as an executive chef for hire, Riley has been very successful in getting women out and to safety with the packs in the Coalition.  But her rescues have bought her to the attention of the Ruling Councils and the kidnappers.

Enter Cameron Nichols, powerful cowboy alpha of the Wolf Meadow pack in Galveston.

Believing the masked women is using his territory as her home base, Cameron intends to discover her identity and bring her under the protection of his pack.

Two strong-willed alphas — fated mates.  Who will rescue who?

Standing side-by-side along with their mates, Roz and Skylar grinned at either and each delivered a staggering blow to the other’s mate.  Maddie tripped Griffin as Catherine smashed a priceless urn over Marco’s head. Marco seemed unphased by the blow and brushed the chards of pottery from his hair.  Declan had a death grip on Ava who managed to stomp on his foot and bite him anyway.

Darby broke free from Jean-Michel and launched herself at Cameron knocking him to the ground.  As Jean-Michel fisted her hair to pull her off of him, she grabbed a small chair, turned within his grasp and broke it over his head.  He shook his head, grinned at her but didn’t loosen his grip and growled at his mate in a menacingly affectionate tone.

Cameron got to his feet and was out the front door just in time to see an SUV speeding up the driveway toward the main road.
