This is a fairly quick read, and I always struggle to rate and review stories of this length as it’s impossible for them to have the depth of story that I normally look for. Maybe it was the brevity of the book but I actually found myself totally caught up by Ivy’s and Darian’s tale and did enjoy the story.
I really liked Ivy, she felt a very credible character, the length of story meant that Darian’s character arc was so rapid it fell somewhere between unbelievable and whiplash. I would love the author to expand this story to include more time and scenes between the H and h prior to her heat as well as a transition period between that heat and the event leading to the culmination of the book. This would allow us to see the connection between Ivy and Darian establish and grow, as well as allow the author time to convince us of both his change of attitude as well as their emerging feelings.
The fated mates theme allowed for the very insta-love aspects of the story, but it felt like a convenient way to avoid redeeming an antihero rather than a genuine, and vital, plot line. Overall this is an entertaining, high heat read and perfect for one you don’t want anything too heavy.
Synopsis Good Omegas never disobey their Alpha. Too bad I’m not one of them. Everyone I know thinks I’m insane. That my own imagination pushed me to a life of solitude. But I know better.
The monster that’s been haunting me is very real and he’s finally captured what he wants… me. Darien Stone is used to taking what he wants. As the world’s most influential Alpha, his power and wealth have Omegas groveling at his feet. But I’m not like other Omegas.
I know exactly who he really is, and want nothing to do with his blood money. He thinks he can control me, that I’ll bend to his every desire. But he’ll quickly learn this seemingly perfect Omega won’t go down without a fight.
Captured by the Alpha is a dark standalone novella, complete with a HEA!
Forbidden The Alpha Collectors #2 Liliana Carlisle
Amelia is a Beta suffering from a mysterious and debilitating disease. Jakob is the sexy alpha who, despite playing havoc with her libido, relives her symptoms. The trouble is Jakob is a Collector and his fight to eliminate the shadowy group who kidnap and sell omegas to the highest bidder puts Amelia at risk.
Forbidden is a high heat, fast paced and entertaining read. I found both characters likeable and was definitely invested in them finding their HEA with one another. The main protagonists were well crafted and had depth whilst a good range of secondary characters added colour to the story. The authors voice is smooth and very readable, her writing style very quickly drew me in and easily held my attention throughout. The chemistry between Jakob and Amelia is scorching hot and I definitely felt the passion and depth of feeling they had for one another.
The plot really unfolded in the second half of the story, with almost non-stop action. Whilst the pace was still good in the first half, personally I felt there was a prevalence of sex scenes that took away somewhat from the story. There were some missed opportunities for other interactions between the protagonists. For example in one of Jakob’s internal monologues he thinks –
“I crave our late-night talks and finding out more about who she is. And in turn, I open up to her, telling her about my past….. ….. I tell her everything and she accepts it all, willingly.”
Had we been party to one of these conversations – particularly one of the baring of souls and secrets – it would really have elevated this book to a very high standard.
Whilst the storyline touches on the topic of sexual slavery, it doesn’t travel very far down that path and their are no detailed scenes of abuse. However my tastes run quite dark so do be aware that my “tame” can be as much as others enjoy! In this case there are mentions of violence, kidnap and assault, though no sexual assault.
This is wrong. He’s an Alpha. I’m a Beta. Our path only leads to heartache. But his body, possessiveness, and passion fuel my obsession as we consume each other. I’ve willingly thrown myself into the arms of a Collector, consequences be damned. But we’re on borrowed time. If I’m not careful, he’ll ruin me. But maybe I want to be ruined.
Forbidden is the second standalone book in The Alpha Collectors, a M/F Alpha/Omega Romance series that features Knotting, Heats, and Ruts, with a guaranteed HEA.
Liliana Carlislehas managed to pack quite a lot into this novella, and I thoroughly enjoyed all of it. The book touches on some pretty dark themes and Calum, the hero, is quite physically rough with Aria when they first meet, immediately upping the ante in this fast-paced and twisty enemies-to-lovers romance. I really enjoyed the author’s prose, the story flowed smoothly and the story very easy to read. In fact I completed it in one sitting and enjoyed every moment of it! Highly recommended if you’re looking for an omegaverse story that finds the middle path between dark and sweet!
Despite being a quicker read there was plenty of conflict between Aria and Calum, plus a good deal of heat. This couple have chemistry in spades and the sex scenes were incredibly steamy and erotic. Whilst most of the book focuses just on the two protagonists, allowing us to really get to know them, the author did add colour to the story by including a few side characters.
Speaking of our main characters, Aria/Rebecca was one tough cookie. Possibly a little naïve at times but entirely understandable given that she is only nineteen. The hero, Calum, displayed some pretty unpleasant behaviour before we really got the chance to know him, so I initially found it a little harder to warm to him. As the story progressed not only did he redeem himself but I could understand why he acted the way he did. He definitely earned himself a place in both my and Aria’s hearts.
Whilst I was left with a few questions about the how their society was structured, there was enough world building for me to work with and, since this is part one of a series, I’m sure we will find out more in future books. As it’s a fairly quick read the story could easily have been overwhelmed by too much exposition on the world, so overall I’m happy with the balance the author went for.
All alone, it’s only a matter of time before he finds where I hide. You can only escape the Collectors for so long. He’ll want to break me. Destroy me. Leave me on my knees, gasping for air. But there’s a fight in me he won’t expect. I can only hope he doesn’t drag me into the darkness with him.
Hunted is the first book in The Alpha Collectors, a M/F Omegaverse Romance series. It contains a destructive Alpha, a rebellious Omega, and a guaranteed HEA.
This enemies-to-lovers story is a fast paced omegaverse romance with plenty of heat and an interesting plot. Both Madelyn and Dereck were likeable characters, the heroine was a little naïve but her age and desire to be accepted made this excusable. The story flows well and I soon found myself caught up in it.
Whilst this followed the “oppressed omega” trope, it’s contemporary setting meant that the discrimination had a very different feel to it. In fact it was quite disturbing to see/experience the discrimination that befell Madelyn, and parallels could be drawn to so many forms of discrimination in the real world.
There is much more to Dereck than first meets the eye, and as we get to truly know him we see why our first impression is, quite rightly, that of a bitter and angry man. His backstory unfolded rather rapidly, my preference would have been for us to have gotten to know the man, and what had shaped him, a little more slowly. I could also have gone for a little more depth to the explanation too.
The world building was solid, the setting was understandable and easy to picture. Personally I would have loved a little more backstory on why omega’s were so looked down on, why their existence was very often a miserable one, with them being treated like third class citizens. This would have been icing though, rather than genuine story substance. However I did like how the author blended the omegaverse and contemporary genres together. The story also had a nice suspense element blended really well with all the key characteristic of an omegaverse world.
He’ll be my ruin, but not before I destroy him… Dereck Archer. The powerful Alpha billionaire, The heartless monster, And my new boss. The man who single-handedly ruined the lives of Omegas everywhere. His ruthlessness knows no bounds, and when we meet, he assumes I’ll fall in line as any good Omega would. Little does he know, I can be just as ruthless. My traitorous body may crave him, But I’m here for one reason only: To destroy his life. Dereck Archer has made many enemies, but I’m the one he’ll never see coming…
Intrusionis an Enemies-to-Lovers M/F Omegaverse Standalone Romance.
The author cleverly wove the classic fairy tale together with an omegaverse setting and blended the two together really well. I’ve not read the original fairy tale, so I don’t know how dark that one goes, but this is very much on the lighter end of the spectrum, albeit the one that still has plenty of steamy sex included!
It did feel a little light on the omegaverse side of things in terms of instinct, dynamics and hierarchy. Personally I would have liked a little more focus on her nesting, the knotting, how the A/B/O dynamic is viewed within the world, but then it possibly would have lost that wonderful fairy tale feel.
It balances on the edge of novel and novella, in terms of length, which limited how much world building the author could achieve. However she did finely craft two rich and detailed main characters who drew me into the story and made the reading experience very enjoyable. It’s not a book that will drag your emotions through the wringer, but sometimes we want a pleasant read, a warm hug of comfort and joy, and this is just the book for getting that.
I sold my soul to the devil. I traded my life for my father’s freedom. Now I’m the Alpha’s prisoner, and he only wants one thing from me… To be his mate. But there’s more to me than meets the eye—I’ll never be the perfect Omega he expects me to be. He’ll always be a monster in my eyes. And if he thinks I can save him… He couldn’t be more wrong.
Beauty and the Alpha is a non-shifter Omegaverse fairytale. It is a standalone novella with dark themes and a HEA!
