INFERNO by Yolanda Olson

A disappointed – ‘Where was the story?’ 1.5 stars

I was going to start my review by saying that this is a ‘marmite book’ – you’ll either love it or hate it, but actually I felt quite impassive about it. Whilst I knew there wasn’t any romance, that there would be no HEA and that I was heading into the very depths of darkness and depravity, I did expect a cohesive story that lead me from A to B. Call me old fashioned but I also expect the blurb to have some relevance to the plot too.

I never felt as though this was ever really a story. It didn’t really contain any of the things I’m looking for in a book – connections, purpose, entertainment, thrills. There was very limited character building and the only character we ‘hear’ from (Joce) felt quite inconsistent. The story was also full of contradictions – at one point it was suggesting all the 3 had been picked and taken by Pater, then we discover they are all his natural children.

There wasn’t really any flow or build to the tale either. It felt as though both the beginning and end had been removed, leaving behind a random section from the middle to read. As though the author had arbitrarily picked a number of really bad things to write about and then just loosely tied them together. As though the entire purpose was to shock and push boundaries just for the heck of it.

I’d heard great things about this book (and series). Indeed I read it as I know a few of my ‘go to’ authors are writing their own books in this world. I also recently read Martyris, Yolanda Olson’s offering in the Cavalieri Della Morte series. Despite being quite a strange read, I loved that one so had high expectations for this. However as well written, as twisted, dark, evil and malevolent as this was, it neither entertained nor evoked emotion in the way I needed it to.

A Romantic Suspense

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

OMG Yolanda Olson, you broke me!

At the moment I just… I just can’t. I need to lie me down in a darkened room, sob quietly and then go to one heck of a lot of counselling.

You spend most of this book a little bit confused, but just persevere – it is SO worth it! The entire tone of the book is just so eerie and sinister and it totally had me hooked. Gareth and Bentlee are such a unique and engaging couple, even if their love is edging on taboo. Avoid spoilers at all costs, and ‘go in blind’. It’s the only way to full enjoy and appreciate the story to its maximum potential.

Martyris is a fairly short read, it took me less than an hour to complete it. Whilst I would have loved it to have been longer, I’m not sure if it would have then had the same impact. I would have liked to know a little more about who Lynette was, it was a strange bit of information thrown in that didn’t really belong anywhere.

Wow, just, but, wow – mind blown Ms Olson. Congratulations and bloody well done.

I like to think of myself as the good guy.

The kind of man that will take a beating or a bullet for my brothers and not think twice about it. But anyone that knows my story has only seen the tip of the proverbial iceberg and my intentions sometimes resemble the Titanic.

It’s when I lose control.

I do my best to love and respect everyone because some people need it more than others—even the ones that don’t deserve it.

My name is Gareth Bresett and the only thing that matters to me in this world is Bentlee Gains. I’ll do everything I can to keep her safe from every evil in this world, including myself.

Because while I like to think that I’m the good guy, I find more pleasure in taking out a mark than I do being in her arms.

Regardless of who that mark happens to be.
